Haven't been there since the mid 80's when I was about 10.

You actually don't have to go all the way down to Medford to get to Crater Lake from Portland this time of year. Go roughly 25 miles past Roseburg and take the Tiller-Trail Hwy (#227) east out of Canyonville (7 Feathers Indian Casino is there). This will take you SE to connect with the Crater Lake Hwy (#62) about 40 miles north of Medford. Take 62 north into the Crater Lake south entrace.

Closer to my age, I guess. I was born in 1969.

Silver Creek Falls outside of Silverton is nice anytime of the year.

I am sure it is closed for the year, unless you are a XC skier, the old McKenzie Pass, US 242, and Dee Wright Observatory. This is in the middle of a lava flow, the observatory is a building make completely of lava, with ports that open toward the different Cascade Peaks. The one for Mt Hood is just a few inches on a side, Hood is about 70mi away and rarely visible, but the Three Sisters are in your lap as well as Mt Jefferson, Mt Washington, Diamond Peak and Black Butt plus several local, smaller Lava domes. Cool place. US 242 to the west has some hairpin turns where you swear the the tail lights in front of you are your own, Fortunately it is now a restricted access scenic route, ie no log trucks. When I was young, it was the THE pass so was complete with trucks, very exciting!

No offense but I thought you were older.

It's cool to know that we're closer in age than I had originally thought.

I wonder how old Vic is?

Very true, the drive along the this section of the South Umpqua is very nice. Not as much appreciated by the locals as 138 and the North Umpqua, but still a beautiful drive.

Concerning the concern of snow on I5, the only place where there is consistent snow issues is in the Siskiyous south of Medford.

Dependent on Weather...

Go to Mt. St. Helens
Columbia River Gorge and take 30 around Mt. Hood and back into Portland, or if you have more time, go to Bend. Better in the summer though.

Around Portland...
OMSI
Pittock Mansion
Columbia Gorge to either Multnomah Falls, or go as far as Hood River... Couple of good places to eat there...
Rose Gardens
McMenamins... I could go for a burger, some frys with malt vinegar and a Black Rabbit.... :D
