I bought a computer "as is" at a swap meet last night. The first time I have ever just bought a computer for a sound card, but what the heck....

The computer isnt the greatest, obviously I was mostly interested in the fact that it came with a Soundblaster Audigy Platinum EX (w/ remote and external center)

I ask the guy to demo the computer for me, which he does. Its running windows 98se and he pulls up quake and plays some mp3s which sound really good with some speakers he has for sale also. Basically, it's a AMD 1.1 Athlon with 256 pc133, geforce 2 mx, 20 gig HD, mid tower, 24x cdr, and of course the Soundblaster Audigy platinum EX (which I want to rip out and put in my p4 system) So I give the guy $375 (he was asking 400). He then tells me he can't sell me the computer with the Win 98 se on it because that is his only copy and he needs it for his other computer. I was like ok, whatever, and he formats the drive to erase the Windows..... I tell him I am gonna run Win ME on it anyway for my kid.

He gives me all the papers, wires, and disks for the Soundblater Audigy, which is a huge bundle of stuff (Fruity loops 3, and a bunch of audio progs) I get home and anxiously rip it out and throw it on my p4. Whaddaya know, the driver disk isnt there. All the retail crap out of the box, even the AOL install cd, but no driver cd. No big deal I think, I go to Creatives website to get the drivers..... NOT!!! They dont have them for download!! WTF>??? They have updates, but no drivers??? I search google, yahoo and every other place for 4 hours last night trying to find drivers..... NO LUCK??? I cant even grab drivers off the computer it was on, because the guy formatted the hard drive to erase his Windows copy off it. Of course I didnt get the phone number to call this guy, he could live anywhere is Sacramento for all I know....

I hit the p2p networks, didnt find anything either.....
DOES ANYONE KNOW or HAVE ANY IDEA where the heck I can get the Windows ME or XP drivers for this card??? this is killin me!

Thanks...

You can thank Creative Labs for your problems. They've implemented a policy whereby you cannot download drivers from their website, only updates to drivers. Which of course means you need the original CD to get the sound card working. CL is perhaps the only company that won't let you download drivers from their website, and I think it's ridiculous. I bought an Audigy because of the great reviews, but CL is screwing up big time with this no-download policy, and I'm not sure if I'll buy a CL card again until it's fixed.

There needs to be a public boycott of CL before they realize the mistake they're making. If we can collectively pinch em where it hurts the most, at the bottom line, then perhaps they'll come to their senses and start offering downloads again. I guess your only option at this point is to find somebody living near you who owns an Audigy to burn you a copy of the driver disc.

I dont know how much difference there is beteween the drivers for an Audigy and a SB Live 5.1 but I just F-Disked my main machine with a SB Live in it and downloaded the "update" off CL site and it is working great. I am running Windows XP.

I have a factory CD for the SB Live around here somewhere. I don't know what the licensing agreement is and I don't want to violate any copyright laws. If there is nothing that says I cant, I could probably email, ftp or otherwise send you the drivers (assuming my SB Live CD would even work).

Same here - I can only assume that this doesn't work for Audigy cards because WinXP doesn't come with an Audigy driver installed, or something like that.
