For the Global Warming Crowd

Take a look at THIS VIDEO from NASA that was taken during a 10 month period in 2000. It's pretty obvious from these pictures/movie that the U.S. is NOT one of the worlds biggest carbon monoxide emitters. Take a look at the Asian Continent/Sub Continent and you'll see that's where the majority of pollution is coming from. When viewing the pictures bear in mind that the red and brown colors are the worst pollution. View the movie and you will see that the U.S. has very little of the darker colors except for the occasional flare-up. India on the other hand is nearly constantly red.

Now tell me....how would the Kyoto treaty have worked since China and India were excluded? It's all there in satellite imaging that they produce FAR MORE carbon monoxide than the US.

If I'm not mistaken, the Kyoto treaty limited carbon dioxide emissions and not carbon monoxide ones, but I could be wrong. That's imagery from the Canadian space agency satellite and U of T, and most of that carbon monoxide is from the burning of the rainforests in south america.

The Canadian Space Agency? What's that, two guys from Alberta with a step ladder?

If you'll look at that page again you'll see that the imagery was taken from NASA's Terra Spacecraft. The flagship in NASA's Earth Observing System (EOS), Terra launched in December 1999 and began collecting science data on February 24, 2000.

I'll take it you were joking as making fun of the source of your data would be tremendously foolish on your part.

<< the Kyoto treaty limited carbon dioxide emissions >>

You're right...I just went and had a look at the Kyoto Protocol.

My point in the original post is that the problem is indeed a global one and if there is going to be a solution then it to needs to be a global one.

I hope you understand that the Terra satellite must contain instrumentation and that the instrumentation to monitor carbon monoxide levels was, in this case, designed and built by the University of Toronto in conjunction with the Canadian Space Agency.

Ahhh...so it's a Canadian piece of equipment on a NASA satellite. Kinda like you guys built the shuttle arm for us. Guess I should have read that last paragraph more carefully. Doh!

Just doing some harmless Canada bashing...I mean if you're gonna bash a country, bash one that can't do anything about it like France or Canada. ;)

Kyoto wasn't the answer. But neither is pointing fingers at other countries and saying "since they aren't doing anything, neither should we". There was a successful global effort to reduce and eliminate CFC use, called the Montreal Protocol. I highly suggest people read up on this - India and China have complied with it.

So much for that theory...

MOPITT was successfully launched on December 18 1999, onboard the Terra satellite, the flagship of NASA's EOS (Earth Observing System) program.

Just rubbing it in your face.

EDIT - Nevermind, didnt see your last post.

Hmmmm....I was really expecting the Greens on this forum to jump all over this thread.

But why? The evidence for global warming is certainly there. The question is how to address it globally. That's what the fighting is all about.

I was just expecting some arguments that the U.S. is still the king of polluters.

We are the kings of consumption, that's for sure. Most countries want all the goodies we have, right or wrong.

i wonder what our per capita CO2 emissions are compared to our share of per capita world product...
basically trying to find who is most wasteful.

I do believe we are probably going through some sort of normal warming but I also beleive it is being sped up by pollution. Some of the studies I have read support that but still say it could get out of hand easily and the warming trend could continue without the usual post warm cooling.

It's a complex matter that does need some real research done before we take some sort of knee jerk reaction.

I saw something last night that said that our production and pollution ratio were about dead even. Makes sense if it's true.

I just can't get over that video and the fact that India is almost continually red and China/Korea/Japan are almost as bad.
