When engaged in pointless narcissistic activities, what difference does it make what one is doing with his hands?

This is almost exactly the comment I was about to make.

And you both are wrong, prayer gives confidence and hope, helps you keep your sanity especially when facing difficult times.

Such as every post you've ever made?

I imagine your pale and delicate hands fluttering nervously in the air, Chris Crocker style, but that might be unfair . . . to Chris Crocker. 😛

Things? Like Cheesecake or Boston Creme Pie?

In what, for what? You can't have those things without shutting your brain off? Please enlighten me.

I suggest you pray for knowledge because it's not selfish. Trust me, you will get it.

To yourself.

My concept of the divine is diffuse and does not envision a corporeal other called "Joe God" living at "1 Heaven Way" but, yeah, sometimes I try to connect with the divinely indivisible whole (<----- a distinctly Buddhist concept.)

Since not one of can prove or disprove anything about religion or the afterlife, in any form, and since string theory, for one, shows that even the underpinnings of our so-called mundane physical universe are probably so damn WEIRD that they outstrip the ability of our present day language and concepts to even encompass it's true nature, just how stupidly certain are YOU about "what is" or isn't?

Only if you actually believe in prayer in the first place. If, on the other hand, you don't believe in the supernatural, praying isn't going to change anything or help you. You're better off trying something else to relieve your stress and sort out your thoughts.

Clearly this thread points out the absurdity of organized religion.

"He prays with his thumbs down, off with his head"

Now, now, we bow and cower before a stern but merciful deity. Cutting off his head would be cruel, let's just cut off the apostate's thumbs, so that the Spring crops will be bountiful!

You must still be stoned for uttering "Jehovah", on this I believe we can all agree. 😛

Folded and interlocked if I'm trying to set an example for kids under the age of 12 (eyes closed, hands folded just helps them not be as distracted) otherwise pretty much I pray in whatever position I'm in, eyes open, hands at sides or in pockets or driving or whatever. Prayer for me is kind of a running twitter with God.

So does yoga.

Or any quiet activity which encourages focusing the mind.

Of course you are correct on the proving aspect of the divine, though I could make a pretty sound argument against any sort of MEANINGFUL afterlife, but I am stupidly certain of this, that talking to the air, or asking the ether for guidance is frivolity itself, no matter if one's mouth moves or how hands are arranged, and am doubly certain no such activity has ever brought more fortune than pure happenstance to its subscribers.

Even if I did prey, why do my hands need to be doing anything at all. I though god cared about what you had say, not how you held your hands.

Added a third response to the poll.

For the record, I seldom "pray" these days, but when I do "commune directly with the divine" these days it is simply and directly and not on my knees or with my hands in any specific position.

But I was a practicing Catholic and went to Catholic school through 5th grade, and when we prayed, it was with fingers upright and parallel. And yet, in that other referenced thread, it seemed like most used the fingers interlocked and folded position, which made me curious about how folks who pray did so. <shrug>

But what did the priest do with his fingers while you were praying? 😛

50% this > Fingers folded and interlocked.
50% that > Fingers upright and parallel

But really if you just bless yourself and talk to God with your hands together that is also good. Then finish it off with a sign of the cross.

Today I prayed for the priest from Austin who was murdered the day after he retired in Nuevo Laredo. He lived a life of poverty, chastity, servitude and obedience to God only to be killed by an aide in a botched kidnapping plot.

What part of "vow of poverty" didn't the killer understand?
