Is Express the same as Priority? Was it insured?

Man that sucks. Someone else here just posted nearly the same thing - luckily for them it was just scanned copies over email. But losing the real docs is a HUGE pain... 🙁

Express and Priority are the same, minus a one day delivery difference at the most. Both options allow you to track a package which is automatically insured up to, I believe, $100 in Ontario. Little use the $100 insurance would do me, it's more the fact of losing my documents that has me upset, not the dollar value attached to them.

This reminds me of getting a passport. They want original driver's license, original birth certificate, original SSN, signature from at least 3 people who know you for at least 5 years that are either a lawyer, judge, police, doctor, dentist etc... I luckly never had my stuff get lost in the mail though and a police, lawyer, and judge go to my church so it was easy enough to get those signatures. But its quite the process. We're all terrorists until proven otherwise.

You'd be crazy not to go to a Passport Office to get a passport... I wouldn't mail that kind of shit around even with Jesus as my postman.

Yeah I wouldn't have done that either, this was just one document, not everything to do with me :S

- Mailed name change form from Ottawa to Thunderbay, both within Ontario Canada
- Mailed it express so I could track it, they don't know where it is now, 2 days overdue
- A lot of personal info & birth certificate + visa inside (copies not accepted)

How worried should I be about identity theft, in your opinion? This is what I'm concerned about now.

--------------

I had to mail some government documents across Ontario this week (from Ottawa to Hundson's Bay). I shipped it express so I could track the package. Sure enough, it's 2 days overdue delivery and they've opened a search case to try and find the package. I haven't called the office to see if they're received it yet, I'll do that Monday.

The Customer rep was not able to look up the postal code of the destination, which is a government mail depo (I confirmed the address with them prior to shipping and after this happend) so the guy said that might have caused a delay, or the system didn't register the delivery for some reason.

Bloody hell I knew this would happen, the letter has my original birth certificate, a ton of personal info, and my credit card information. If they don't find it next week I'm going to cancel the CC and get a new birth certificate *groans*.

WTFBailoutBill?! u mailed your real birth cert?!

*facepalm*

y didnt u give it in person?

have fun in the upcoming years sorting out identity theft issues

Can you even read?

You have to send your original birth certificate to get a Canadian passport. No copies accepted.

I should know, I have to do the same thing.

Fortunately, I've had a second b.c. printed up for this reason.

I'm going to call the Alberta government and get them to cancel the current one that's out there, somewhere, and get me a new one if this doesn't resolve pretty quickly.

🙂 I think you're getting a little preemptive. I suspect the problem is with CP's tracking system, and your info is just running a bit behind. Not that you shouldn't be concerned, but I wouldn't run around cutting things up yet. Give them until Tuesday before being very concerned, I would think.

That's what I'm hoping has happened, I just want to get my ducks in a row now if it doesn't turn up. Thanks Kenazo!

I don't think he's a moron, he just doesn't know.

JEDI - when I had to rush process my passport and tourist visa back in 2006, I had to send my original birth certificate as well. When I later got my business visa, I had to send it again along with my real passport. Its just the way it is.

Yeah it's very screwed up here for that. Not sure if US is just as bad or not, with the whole homeland security crap. But a lot of that stuff here is strictly a money grabber. It's like license plate stickers, the biggest scam ever.

It's not lost. It might not have made it to its intended destination... but it's not lost. Somebody has it.

Yea, that's true. It's also what I'm worried about. It could have arrived and the system is just slow, or the problem with the postal code mentioned above caused a delay, we'll see next week.

You're being overly optomistic... You might as well have stuffed $100 bills in that envelope.

I actually think it's far worse than a couple hundred bucks being lost, if it doesn't find it's way back to me.

It is likely under something, like a box with a bit of sticky tape on the side or something to grab your package, happened to me once. Give it a little bit of time, like until Tuesday or so, getting worked up about it is just going to piss you off more.

Worst case scenario, cancel everything you can and inform the respected entities of the loss. Sucks though.

PS: What part of Ottawa? I'm off Montreal and Blair.

Hah no shit! I'm at the bottom of Blair hill right at Montreal! We're not very far at all.

why on earth would you trust postal service for such important documents?

I've used expresspost before, to be honest I thought it would be the same as using fedex or purolator. I figured the government sends these kind of documents around using regular mail all the time, not smart in retrospect.
