I work infrequently at a local small business PC repair store called (I know it's not original) Computer City. I have a key and get called in at night to handle all the stuff their techs couldn't handle. Unofficially, I'm the "night time tech." I get all the laptop stuff they're too scared to handle too ;)

I go in at most three nights a week, but I do order parts for people and recommend and build systems so I guess I'm influential in sales so I'm retail also.

It's a long shot, because I know it's not a chain, but does Intel happen to have a wildcard in that unlisted list of retail chains such as "small business?"

I was working daily but I got tired of being the only one dealing with customers when the owner screwed up so much and having to sacrifice all day for what I could do by staying up late at night. Also, dealing with customers meant I usually didn't even get to the tech work until after closing anyway and because that was my job I said "from now on, I'm coming in at night. Take it or leave it" They still call me in during the day if a customer needs a rush job, so I still do get some hours in the retail portion of the business.

Sorry, but what makes a $5-7/hr employee of a chain store eligible for at $2-3-400 deal? I could see if you were a major distributor, but someone who participates in the sale of a couple of systems a month??C'mon . I think it's complete bullsh!t when you try to push ethics on a deal like this.
I'm now working for one of these retail stores and selling computers too but I definately do not make only $5-7 an hour. In fact some of my co-workers make much much more. Intel's main point of doing this is to give the point of sale people some in the products they sell. Hey this will give me the urge to build another system and learn more about their desktop stuff. I went completely portable recently and haven't had the urge to go back.

Kind of off topic, anyone who want to sell their please PM me.

On topic, NOT FOR RESALE

Resale means commercial.
If I get a free promo disc from my local radio station, and it says 'NOT FOR RESALE', you can still sell it on ebay or private.
And if someone else would like to sell theirs, PM me as well.

THIS year I'll finally get in! :D The one perk to making $7 Canadian per hour at Staples.

$7/hr for computers. Beyond pathetic.....

This is the only perk I'll be seeing... the job sucks royally any other way you look at it.

That said, DON'T YOU DARE TRY TO SHAFT ME OUT OF GETTING THIS DEAL!!!! :| :| :| :|

C'mon, why are retail employees only eligible for this (and the other MS deal)? It'd be great if such offers could be extended to those who could use the whole package fully (e.g. researchers :) ). Probably half of the machines that get upgraded with this deal will only be used for web surfing, playing games, and/or simple document processing. Is a 3.0GHz CPU really needed for this?

Quit your whining, and get a job in retail. How come car lot employees get great discounts on cars and we dont, just cause.

because intel is trying to win salepeople over so that they'll promote their products. Gaming is THE driving force behind high end machines, and if you think otherwise point yourself to intel's recent IDF where they announced Xeon based P4 specifically for gaming. Are they making a CPU just for researchers, or for any other purpose? No.

I agree that the gaming industry is the dominant force for high end CPUs. However, this deal would be nice for the ppl in the education as well (and other fields of course). Better computers for students would be great. Thanks for sensible and constructive response.

The reason why they're giving us retail people a great deal (pretty much giving it away really ;)) is because they want you as a salesperson, recommend Intel, because as you're talking to the customer, you can mention, "i've got this one at home, it's really fast..." and so on. Basically, they want you to favor their products and hence carry that on to work, and reccommend them to all your computer customers. now, granted this is intel's ideal situation, it doesn't necessarily happen. but it's the same reason that companies give away software as NFR versions to retail salespeople, so that they have some personal experience and more knowledge about the given product.

Although, i'm just glad i'm in retail when these type of deals come along, it sure makes dealing with all the idiot customers over time at least a little bit worth it :)

My friend is about to start working at one of the retailers in a few days. Is there a time period you had to be working from? Or as long as your working there before Oct. 1 you can get the deal?

I wonder why OfficeMax is not participating this year? It must have been the Boise paper merger that ruins it. Oh well, I am hoping for next year.

Bleh, I would pay for a 3ghz w/ mobo and xp pro. PM me also if you are willing to sell it to me. :)
Also it doesn't say anywhere about a certain amount of time that you had to be working at that retail store.

That sucks:disgust:

Why do people in retail get the quirks???

People like us, who check out forums like this, should be eligible as well

people in retail get perks like this because they need retribution for dealing with lines of people screaming about pricematching and other things of that nature

Want to talk about lines of screaming people? There are not lines like the ones I've seen working at Fry's!!! Thanks for the Heads up tho guys, I'm glad that Fry's is on the list of participating vendors, truly does make putting up with the screaming people worth it for this one shot.

For those who have done this before, I'm guessing they are going to limit it to one per person, it would be nice if I could score one for my brother too, we're both in desperate need of a new system. Anyone know what the limits might be? Thanks in advance.
