Also, guys, seriously, Facebook is specifically FOR TEENAGERS!
The very young and the adults with real lives dont fucking need it. I check mine once every other week at the most.
Facebook generated revenue from Ads. People who hit it 500 times a day are the target audience.

I do and none of my kids will ever have facebook, myspace or twitter or any of those stupid social networking accounts.

Wouldn't it be better to allow them to do it so long as (1) you monitor it, and (2) they don't abuse it? Your kids are going to want to do whatever it is other kids are doing; if you attempt to prevent it simply because you're against it, you may well force them to find ways to do it outside of your influence.

It's better to rule the kids with an iron fist. So instead of wasting time with facebook, they'll be out in the shed huffing spray paint.

nope. my wife and I have explained to them why we are against it and they understand. its not like we said NO YOU WILL NOT DO THAT!!! and walk away. there are specific reasons why we dont allow it and they respect those reasons. could they do it behind our back? sure, will they? no.

opendns, keyloggers tell me pretty much everything i need to know on my kids surfing activities...

...at home.

edit:
But, if you've explained it and they do respect your reasons, then  Eventually, it does all just come down to trust, respect and good parenting.

For because if they aren't allowed on they will get on anyways and say they are 18+, which will lead to even more problems.

everything that my parents banned me from doing on the computer as a teen I figured out a way to do.

my dad even went so far as to attach a timer to the powerstrip and put the whole shebang into a locked toolbox.

Anyone that thinks this is something new should do a search on Slam Books aka teens doing the same crap without a computer 40 years ago.

Right, because there's no way high-schoolers would pass notes about the very same topics without the internet.

Learn to parent your kids.

Notes get passed around a classroom.

The internet goes viral at times.

I don't think teenagers should be exempt from FaceBook at all. I due think they should be held accountable more and if they can't do the time then one of their parents/guardians get elected to serve.

The bullying thing is sick...it extends to adults.

lil rudeguy is 13 (nearly 14) and has had facebook for a while now. I like it because its an easy way for me to know whats going on with him.

***sigh***

40 years ago probably had 30-40 kids at most.

Today it's 1000's or more if online. Many are script kiddies and the like.

Another sad part it's the people that were most slighted growing up that are the biggest advocates of how this is totally normal.

Many adults have been arrested posing as just some kid from the same town trying to ruin a child over a mistake they already felt.

Most at this level really are reacting out of fear and not respect.

Being so active here as a parent then saying to your kids they cannot do that is the answer.

Kids learn from what their parents do and how the times change.

IMHO facebook just brings out the parenting. I use it a lot now and I am not a joiner of every new fad.

It's popular with businesses, charities, and socially.

It's become my main tickler for invites to fun stuff in my area.

I personally don't use Facebook but I know many adults in their 40's and 50's that use Facebook all the time to communicate with friends that have moved away during the years.

Remote parenting?

A keylogger to me is the ultimate violation of trust.

If anyone were to do that to me, I'd do everything in my power to defy them.

I see alot of jailbait lying about their age on social network sites.
Sure they look developed and old enough, but then after reading in-between the lines you realize they just turned 16. Fuuuuuuuuu

I haven't used facebook in a while. The new layout is awful. It's more like picture-book than facebook. Also, I hate that it is open to everyone now.
