For once I am thankful for modern technology (smartphones).

I am by no means a Luddite, but I also don't really use smartphones like most people do. They're phones. And I don't typically even make phone calls much. Everything else that smartphones do I typically do at a computer, which I'm at or near for about 16-20 hours a day (depending on how much sleep I get).

I have found the smartphone's niche in my life though: When I run out of toilet paper in the bathroom.

The damn thing is a life saver.

How is that? You call someone if your family to get you some?

look at all these fancy people with cellular phones. Telegram not good enough for you beaniks?

I got a new cell phone in January and signed up for Page Plus pay-as-you-go. I put $10 on the account at the time, and today there's $4.63 on the account. It's the only phone I use.

I don't use smartphones either.

I see no benefit in paying over $100 a month just to have access to the internet wherever there is a mobile signal.

I do have an iPod with me at all times. I use it during subway rides when I need to kill time while in transit; games and music.

On the toilet - I've got the iPad (reading comics, news, reddit, etc.).

I've never used the iPad/Pod to do any serious work,.. other than track my progress at the gym on the iPod.

if you had a smartphone you'd be able to fact check yourself and know that it doesn't cost $100/month

maybe if you're paying for a plan AND paying monthly for the phone

I'm on a Verizon plan...unlimited text and messages, 1 gig data, full subsidy and upgrades every 2 years. $50. Data is low, but I can deal with it. Nice part is that it's pretty low for a subsidy plan. Worth it if you aren't a total data hog.

Or you could, you know...be smart and use it to make your life easier. I can take a few seconds and review emails or send off quick responses to things instead of needing to sign into a full computer and take 3x as long to do the same thing. Or use it for a quick google maps instead of lugging around a clunky old GPS device or instead of using a full computer and printing off directions. Or I can use it to easily track all my workouts instead of needing to sit down at a computer and do that. Or I can quickly price shop things on fly if something seems like a decent deal but really isn't. Pay bills. Scan a check to deposit to a bank. Get quick statement balances. Reserve a movie from Redbox. You name it.

Plus I can consolidate a phone, camera, GPS, computer, and music player into one simple little device.

But hey, that's all just time wasting right?

Best.
Thing.
Ever.

People who don't have a use for smartphones are people who work individual jobs with no social life. 😛

When emails and texts can be time-critical a smartphone is a necessity. The "24 hours to respond" rule is steadily eroding.

I have 30 minutes... :/
24 hours would be nice....that's almost to the "it'll wait til Monday" point. 😀

aka: Top 10 Ways I Know You're a Douchebag Hipster

Wanting to not sit in traffic makes me a Douchebag Hipster? Damn. Those hipsters ruin everything. Guess I gotta sit in traffic and not check Waze for alternate routes from now on. 🙁

How exactly does a smart phone solve the problem of running out of toilet paper?
You call Amazon and they send a drone with some Quilted Northern right into your crapper?

Google maps is also great if you take public transportation. Never again do you have to sit down and figure out a bus or train schedule and route.

Ehh, I've gotten by in the bathroom with a Game Boy (Color). When I was 7, I even had spare AAs kept in the drawer.

Or you call your wife down in family room and have her tear up some old sheets. 🙂

I used to have VZW unlimited and didn't want to pay full price for a phone upgrade so I dropped to the 6GB plan for the same $30/mo. I thought that sucked and my world was over but it turns out after 13 months, not a single month have I used over 1GB and that includes going on vacation and tethering for the kids. Plenty of wifi to hold me over. If there were a cheaper plan I'd even do that.

We had nice triple pane windows installed a year ago. I was up on the ladder replacing some siding yesterday and found where they hadn't caulked the upper edge of the drip guard correctly on a window and its let water get in the trim area and is rotting out the window frame/trim. I pulled out my phone, snapped a few pics of the problem, searched my gmail for the window company name (I had emails from them last year), found the email address, created a new email message, attached the photos, and sent them off. About 10 minutes later, I had a phone call letting me know they would be sending someone out to fix the issue early next week. So phone, camera, email, all in one that I could use from my ladder instead of hunting for a camera, taking photos, copying them to my computer, and then having to send them off. Really saved me some time and allowed me to continue working on what was important to me.

yup... I'm on a $60/month plan for 2g data and unlimited text/voice ($48/month, really, since I get a 20% discount through work, but not counting that since it's obviously not available for everyone)

tbh, I've never even come close to hitting the cap, but I'm also not a big music/video streamer. I download ripped tv shows/movies to watch on my train ride to work, and download podcasts to listen to on my 1 mile walk after the train.

OMG having the internet everywhere has been the biggest improvement in my life since I have been born.
I agree.
Smart phones with internet access anywhere is revolutionary for the world. It will change society more than we can possibly know.

I despise hipsters, but if loving my smartphone makes me a hipster... then I'm a hipster. You do understand that most of us aren't tied to a PC all day long, nor would we ever want to be. Having the Internet at your fingertips while out and about is glorious.

For those of us that travel, the damn thing is a godsend.
