Think of how absurd it would seem if they wrote that some guy gave up on buying the three or four 50 dollar video games he was planning on buying so that he could instead buy his kid some fucking junk they only want because of marketing brainwashing... and the article paints the guy as some kind of heroic figure for these actions

On the flip side, I tend to agree that the word choice is not particularly apt with regards to this particular article. Frankly, it's this sort of skewed consumer-based perspective that goes on in America, combined with food-eating contests, that makes people around the world hate us all the more.
