Holy sh!t, I agree with Gruck for once. You can't be fcking serious Stark. The stock buds sound like sh!t.
Yep, and this goes for most any player, Apple isn't alone here. Only some Rio and perhaps some Iriver players come with buds which aren't complete crap - and the buds those models come with are barely a step up. Nor is there anything wrong with it; I'd prefer to be left the option to use my headphone and possibly amp of choice rather than getting stuck with something of their choosing, at a price of their choosing. That players ship with the minimum is fine, but let's not let our love of round, red fruit get in the way of an objective opinion ;)

Now I can't tell if this is a joke or serious. However, funny that you mention isolation, because with all canal earbuds I've used, when there is no music playing (i.e. the break between songs) my ears seem to contract and produce a buzzing sound. I experience that same sound when I yawn...perhaps some of you might understand.

the 71's are for suckers. get a pair of MDR E888 and you'll notice the difference in a couple of weeks.

OK...they have those posted on ipodlounge too, but I did not see those in the store. But why a couple of weeks? Is that the period it takes to forget everything else? :p

Where/what/how are Etymotics?
Don't know too much about the Sennheiser MX400/500s either...oh well

Now I am seriously considering trying the Koss Plugs (I saw them at Best Buy) but MAN o MAN...those things look BEASTLY. I cannot imagine stuffing those into my ears...I might end up with tinnitus maximus or some weird jazz. :)

I own the Sony MDR-EX71SL and I can say, easily one of my best audio related purchases I have every made. A pair of $40 earbuds which deliver excellent sound in music, movies, and games. Though, for $65, I would definately pick a pair of the Shure E2c... just can't beat that price.

You think Sonys are good? What other phones have you heard?

The Shure's you have to place them in your ear perfectly so that the sound is directly going into the canal.. its weird but as you play with it with the music on you hit the "sweetspot" and then AHHHHH....

I just got them last week. Very nice quality for the price. Plus they have a little volume control on them which is pretty cool. I recommend them for somebody who doesnt want to spend a lot. You probably cant compare them to the higher end ones, but for 15 bucks they are great.

IF I BOUGHT NEW ONES, PEOPLE WOULDN'T INSTANTLY KNOW AND ADMIRE ME AS A PROUD PURCHASER OF AN APPLE PRODUCT

BTW- check out Koss "The Plug". Pretty good for $20. Not as much bass response as I would like, but leaps and bounds better than the stock earbuds that came with my Ipod.
look for some mods on headwize, they GREATLY improve the sound. with proper mod job, i used to prefer it to mx500. eventually i started noticing mx500 did have much nicer highs.. but modded plugs have very warm and gentle sound with a slight bass hump (which can be adjusted by the amount of foam you stuff inside btw) which i found close to ideal for portable use.

You didn't think they were worth $150 because you were using a crap source. Hook them up to a Rio or Iriver player and you'd see why they are. Btw Sony is garbage.
i agree there is a noticeable difference between players, to me anyway. but you know you are exaggerating a fair bit when you make it sound like it is greater than the differece between the earphones. not all sony is garbage, i would kill to get me a R-10 :D

gurck is right about the stock phones that come with iriver - mx300s are not the top of the line but better than the most.

Yup. I have the e3c and they're amazing when I hook it up to a CD player. You DO have to stick them in deeper than you initially think.

I don't have an iPod so I'm not sure if the ipod can fully power it.
