Before I start, here is the disclaimer:
This is based on my personal experience as a result of wondering if it is truly worth upgrading from the stock Apple Ipod earbuds. Many people bash the stock earbuds as horrible pieces of crap (*cough Gurck *cough)...I personally am no audiophile but I do appreciate quality sound reproduction (I am guessing most of you are in the same boat).

The Shure E3C's

I tried these in the Apple store since the associate was kind enough to allow me to try an open box set. Now these were selling there for $149 so I started off with the prejudice that these better sound DARNED GOOD for something that costs nearly as much as my Ipod. So I stood there in the store listening for a good 5 minutes or more to various kinds of music: techno, classical, rap, and r&b....

The verdict: These earbuds do an excellent job of isolating sound (during the middle of the day at the Stanford Shopping Center too!) However, while they do sound clearer than the stock Apple earbuds, they are nowhere near what I'd expect for $150. Now, I can understand if you're a frequent flyer and thus have a need for sound isolation, but I prefer not to be deaf when walking around campus.

The Sony MDR-EX71SL's

I bought these at Best Buy for $50 just to try them out. Now, $50 is a lot less than $150 so I set my expectations accordingly. People over at ipodlounge.com seem to love these, so naturally I was very curious.

Also, with earbuds that go halfway into the ear canal, whenever the music stops, my ears produce this strange buzzing sound that I never get with external earbuds. Not unbearable, but unpleasant nonetheless.

The verdict: These do a good job of isolating sound as well, but somewhat less than the Shure's. The biggest thing I noticed about these earbuds are their greatly enhanced treble and bass compared to the stock Apple earbuds. Now, this is excellent for techno music and, in some cases, rap. If I listened to those two genre's exclusively, I would buy these in a heartbeat. However, these perform less well for r&b and flat out horrible for classical music. In the end, I returned these to Best Buy.

The In-Ear Apple Earbuds[/i]

OK, I'm just going to be straight here: DON'T GET THESE. For every type of music, it sounds it's being produced at the end of a 10-yard long metal tube. In other words: TINNY.

My opinion
In the end, I am still using the stock Apples because I just couldn't find a good reason to pay $50 or more for other earbuds that don't give me a good bang for the buck.

OK...now I'd like to hear your opinions :) Keep it rated PG people!

Love my e3c's. Best $130 I've spent in a while. The bass response is far better than my old e2c's, and the rolled-off highs are easily replaced with EQ tweaking (although I doubt you could do so well with the iPod's EQ).

I can't believe you tried out canalphones someone else had in their ear previously, though. Gross.

Ewwww....returned in-ear buds. That's one open box buy I wouldn't go for :p

BTW- check out Koss "The Plug". Pretty good for $20. Not as much bass response as I would like, but leaps and bounds better than the stock earbuds that came with my Ipod.

I'm using the headphones I got with my portable CD player a few years ago. I can't stand the earbuds. They fall out and are uncomfortable in my ears.

i disagree with the in-ears. i really like mine. the sound doesnt sound tinny at all- theyre noticeably better than the ones that came with my ipod. and theyre oh-so-comfortable. my only real gripe with them is that they dont stay in at all when im running, so theyre pretty much useless if you want to do anything more active than walking.

$10 says you didn't have the Shures' in correctly. I had mine for months before I realized I could stick them in a tad farther, what a fvcking difference.

I no longer have any use for headphones that don't plug right inside my head! The sound of other headphones vary tremendously, depending on how tight they are pressed against my ear, or the way they're positioned. Full size headphones with tight seals get around that, but cost a lot more, and aren't comfortable to move around with.

MDR-EX51LP are good bang for the buck to me. I have to tweak the treble up a hair, due to old age, but they sound perfect at that point. Too bad they're so hard to cram in my right ear canal, or I'd rate them 10 out of 10.

You didn't think they were worth $150 because you were using a crap source. Hook them up to a Rio or Iriver player and you'd see why they are. Btw Sony is garbage.

That's what I use. Not the best sound but decent (heads and tails above the stock Apples) for the price. That and I don't feel bad when a set get's destroyed every 4-6 months.

Edit: Ah, gruck is in. I was wondering what was taking so long.

Try some Etymotic earbuds. Price range around the same as the Shures. Performance excellent.

The buzzing you get is due to tinnitus most likely, which is not the fault of the headphones, but a phenomenon of your ears that isolation brings out.

That's funny. It's a night and day difference listening to my Ipod with the stock buds and a nice set of open air Sennheiser cans.

Your rabid hatred of Ipods leaves you blind of any objective opinions.

It makes a difference, sure - but sound is only as good as the weakest link in the chain. Take out the cheap buds that most players, ipod or otherwise, ship with, and the ipod falls glaringly short in this area. At all times I remain rational; it's the rabid fanboys who flame me, often making things up (as they have no actual argument since the ipod really does suck) who are blind.

the 71's are for suckers. get a pair of MDR E888 and you'll notice the difference in a couple of weeks.
