Where did you guys purchase it? I'm leaning towards purchasing it from the apple store with the educational discount and discounted applecare warranty.

Should I just get it at a retailer like Circuit City or something?

How did you guys get your IPods? Think the applestore is the best way to go?

Yes Gurck, the IPod is overpriced, and the iRiver would kick its ass anyday. However, I've always been an apple fan and I love their "bland white" design. I know you hate the IPod but hey, to each his own.

NO, get it from a place like Best Buy or Circuit City, because when, not if it fvcks up, they offer the longest/cheapest warranty options.

Price plays a big part in it, if you can get a good price with a student discount that changes things.

A Student discount runs at $269 for a 20GIG 4th generation edition. The applecare 2 year warranty extension added onto the IPOD costs a total of $309.

$309 I think is OKAY in my books, 2 years is enough for me, and I don't have to eat the tax of other retailers.

Other retailers would cost $300 + 60 for applecare + tax = ~$390.

It seems as if its a no brainer for me but just wanted other opinions.

But the scope of applecare isn't the same as the two year warranty with Best Buy. Apple will send you a horrible refurbished model if you send your NEW one in for service. I'd pay the 330 from best buy and have the comfort that if anything whatsoever happens to it, they'll just hand you a brand new one off the shelf.

Really? I didn't know that BB or CC offered their own protection plans on it. I bought mine at CompUSA and they only offered me the Apple warranty with no mention of their own in house one.

Yep, the one time a best buy warranty is actually worth it's salt.

The $70 plan on my G2 got me a free upgrade to a G3 when the G2 died on me. Not a bad upgrade there.
At the time I purchased my mini though, BB was out of stock nationwide on them. I preferred to puchase from there but couldn't.

Yeah the a warranty like BB's might be worth it on an iPod. It's going to be taken everywhere which means lots of banging, dropping sitting accident possiblities.

anyone have experience with Circuit City's warranty?

I'm iffy about the Best Buy because I've also heard nightmare stories about it.

Hrm.. anybody else?

Cityadvantage Protection Plan for 2-years on Apple M9282LLA

Circuit City says if there's a problem, they're replace it on the spot. Is that like Best Buy too?

bump for the night crowd, sorry if there's lots of IPOD threads going on (free ipods and ipod vs iriver sort) but it's a pretty big purchase (to me at least) and I'd like to ask the community before I make my final decision.

I hate best buy. They look for any reason they can find not give you the iPod. They will try to find the smallest scratch and yell physical damage so they don't have to give it to you. I had to go to 3 Bestbuys to finally get mine replaced.

Best Buy will send it to the service center, where they will look it over and see if they can repair it. If not, they will give you a new one.

I did hear good things about CompUSA TAP plan for the ipod, but i think they stopped offering it.

for these warranties. do you still have to keep the receipt until the warrantly expires?

these warranties also run concurrently with the manufacturers warranty.

I got mine at bestbuy w/ their 2 year warranty. I already exchanged one, it was acting funny(and my screen was a little scratched) traded w/o question. Also on other forums they have had 3rd gens break and bestbuy gave them a brand new 4th gen. I'm hoping that happens to mine when the end of my warranty nears and a 5th gen is out :D

Bought my 3G 15gb ipod refurb'd from apple.com a few weeks ago, I love it. I see no problem with buying it direct from apple if it's significantly cheaper.

Yep, CompUSA only offers the AppleCare plan now with iPods.
