For how long will 939 CPUs be available?

Hello,
I have a secondary computer with a S939 mobo and an Athlon 64 @2500. It runs what it needs to run just fine with the current setup, but as I intend to keep it around for a while, I was planning on buying a dual core Opteron around christmas to keep it fairly up-to-date.

Now I'm not one to keep much track of hardware markets, but I've seen that S939 is on its way out and that there aren't many available 939 CPUs in some stores these days.

So, I would really appreciate it if any of you who have followed the hardware markets over the years and know how these companies operate, could give me any indication on when all 939 CPUs might be pulled off the market? Should I be worried about not being able to get a 939 CPU in December, and what about spring 2008?

939 is long dead, it is not in production anymore, so it will stay around as long as retailers have the CPU to sell (don't expect many price cuts) that can be a long time though as Newegg had a Slot T Duron available clear up until AMD 64 was released. (like 8 years or so)

I was surprised to see some people get 939 processors made in March of 2007, especially after the announcement in June 2006 that they were stopping it in July 2006. If you want one, I would not wait until Christmas.

if prices for socket 939 CPUs are going to fall, they will do so in the next week or two, along with the other AMD and Intel price cuts.

By about August 1 or so, I would recommend you pick up one of these:

The OEM CPUs are good if you already have a good cooler, or you like to use you own heatsink and fan. If not, the Opteron 165 or 170 are excellent, come with a great stock cooler (at least my 170 did).

they will still be available on ebay for a long time, but once they're gone from retailer shelves prices on ebay will only go up.

Price sheet still shows an X2 4200 939 for $89. That is the only socket 939 X2, though.

That is a very good price. I paid in January around $200 for this X2 4400 so you can not go wrong with that price.

The only difference between the 4200 and the 4400 is the 4400 has an extra meg of L2 cache. Performance wise there will not be much of a difference.

Newegg has it listed for $103.99 and they are in stock.

I got a 170 Opty that was produced this year. I would imagine that is all over by now. Look for all 939 stuff to go "off shelf" by the end of the summer. The 4200 Toledo is an excellent CPU. If you can get a 175 Opty for $140.00 then go for that.

Well, AMD announced EOL on certain S939 models in July 2006, not all S939 production:

As you note, some S939 parts were still being produced as late as March 2007. AMD has been known to quietly produce certain parts as long as there is a demand for them in spite of prior statements on EOL. S939 is a good place to dump excess AM2 cores that aren't selling very well or AMD no longer has a slot for after changing its AM2 line-up.

Socket A/462 Duron parts were supposed to be done for good by mid-2004, and for a while it looked as though this was indeed the case, because Applebred Duron models were out-of-stock for many weeks at all the major resellers. Then significant quantities of Applebred Duron 1800 and 1600 parts with a production date of 02/2005 appeared in stock again at all the major resellers and were available for a good two or three months before supplies dried up again. I still have a few Duron 1800s produced in 2005.

For the price, I'd go with the Opteron 165 ($100) over both the X2 4200+ or 4400+. Since you will likely be overclocking, the Opteron would likely overclock slightly higher than the X2 chips.
