34.6 1600x1200 Ultra No AI/VS
42.9 1600x1200 Ultra No Shadows/VS/4x AI
27.3 1600x1200 Ultra Everything on/4x AI
42.9 1600x1200 Ultra No VS/Shadows/AI

27.3 1600x1200 Ultra Everything on/8x AI
26.7 1600x1200 High Everything on/8x AI
26.7 1280x1024 Ultra Everything on/8x AI

I figure the last run of timedemo would be a lot higher. Weird.

Using 4.7 cats

If you want "impressive" Doom3 benchmark scores you should have gotten a 6800 Ultra. Try running it with "timedemo demo 1 1" and see if that makes a difference.

When I play I don't really notice a difference in visual candy between high and ultra during play so I play on high and runs great at 1600x1200. The last 3 time demos struck me as weird.

what does timedemo demo1 1 do?

What is vsync's purpose anyway? Is it just more eye candy?

Try 4.9 beta cats.. and try humus's tweak

Also, stick to High mode as Ultra mode is designed for 512mb+ video cards and will not have much of a noticeable IQ difference from High.

Go talk to HUMUS about a horse, then come back and talk to us. ;)

(oh yeah, force 16xAF in control panel)

He hit it right on the head, Ultra mode isn't an option on todays cards.
You really need 512mb of VIDEO CARD memory to use this mode.

All this trouble just to get average Doom3 performance, I didn't have to do any tweaking with my 6800GT to get GREAT Doom performance! :)

Would that decent game be Half Life 2? Well from the rumours I have been hearing nvidia are prepared for Half Life 2. They will release a driver which uses the same x800 optimization used by ati and it gives a huge performance increase for the 6800 range not just in Half Life 2 but other games as well (ie Doom3) as well! :D

With Doom3 ATI got caught with their pants down, with Half Life 2 Nvidia are more than prepared! :)

nemesis, you've been asked to gloat inanely elsewhere, as it's not helping the OP at all.

rob49hawk, follow stardust's and silverback's advice. Roll back to just High mode, try the latest Catalysts, make sure you don't have AA or AF on in the ATi Control Panel, and try Humus' tweak (check the sticky thread in Beyond3D's Games forum). The X800s don't have as good a time of it as the 6800s in Doom 3, so dial down the res one notch, too.

I know it's disappointing that your top-of-the-line card falters in Doom 3, but it's just one game. The XTPE excels pretty much everywhere else, so just suffer the lower res in Doom 3 and look forward to other titles. :)

Don't run under ultra mode and absolutely don't use AA or vsync. Also use 16x performance AF.

Does precaching happen during gameplay?
Yes. The extra switch is just for the timedemo.

Tried the new 4.9cats. I got:

109fps 1600x1200 Everything on with 8x?

Weird. I thought the game wasnt supposed to go over 60fps?

It doesn't go over 60FPS in-game, they remove the cap for benchmarking.

These are some of the tweaks I found on the net. I don't have the game so I cannot attest to how well they work myself.

Doom 3 Performance Enhancements

In your DOOM 3 directory, find "DoomConfig.cfg" (x:\Program Files\Doom 3\base). Open DoomConfig.cfg in Notepad.

Find the line:

seta image_cacheMegs "32"

I changed 32 to 96.

One said: "In the base folder of ur Doom 3 installation, there are several *.pk4 files These files contains all the resources that doom 3 uses, like models, textures, sounds, ? If these files are uncompressed using WinRAR, u will see great speed ups in doom since now, those files no longer need to be extracted".
Be warned that after extraction, your Doom III installation will be over 4GB, but that you can delete the *.pk4 files afterwards.
The second mail came from Bill, and was very detailed and helpful:
"Here are some changes to the DoomConfig.cfg file that some people report to being helpful in performance but not always in FPS btw.
seta image_useCache "1" == originally ? 0
seta image_cacheMegs "256" == Originally 20 (set this to half your total system ram)
seta image_cacheMinK "20480" == originally 200 (change or will crash when u set usecache to 1)
seta com_showFPS "1" == originally 0 to show your FPS
seta com_videoram "128" == Added this value. Memory on video card, default is 64 so this should help

Also this is an extensive solution: How to boost your Doom3 performance by 40% on ATI hardware

Also set AF within the game, not in ATI's control panel.
