For First Time, More Singles In U.S. Than Married Couples

What effect does this have on the economy?

It could have a negative effect on the housing market and consumer spending.

Because singles are less likely to have children–and divorced singles who already have children are less likely to have more–“they are bound to be more self-centered in the way they live and spend money,” Yardeni said.

Dumb article is dumb, especially the bolded part. People aren't obligated to reproduce, especially just to prop up the economy. Leave it to Dave to continue trolling with dumb, alarmist articles.

Jailhouse visits are free.

Roflllllllllllllllololl.

But seriously, this doesn't surprise me. More and more people are focusing (women especially) on their careers, and less on starting families. They become slaves to their jobs and only have time to support lining the pockets of the ever growing wealth of their company's CEOs.

What point is that, he always get's the short end of the stick?

About the obvious bias of the law. What kind of fucked up country makes it so a woman can run off with another man while you are serving your country and still be entitled to half your stuff?

I thought you were better informed? Aren't you an accountant or something of that nature?

The number of white students graduating high school is projected to drop 13 percent between the 2008-2009 school year and 2024-2025. That presents challenges for teachers and institutions, as minorities currently have far higher dropout rates and far lower achievement rates. Northeastern states will be particularly challenged as they lose population to southern states, the report says.

As the percentage of whites decreases, and minorities have a higher high school dropout rate than whites, who is going to be paying taxes?

We are looking at a demographic shift over the next generation, or the next 20+ years.

The real question is what is it that the rich have done to cause this extreme problem and how can we blame the Koch brothers?

I thought this was happening because all women are whores or somesuch thing. Or is it because of the liberal progressive communist feminist agenda keeping men down and fluoridated water?

Income inequality plays a roll in fewer children being born.

During a recession birthrates drop. Look at Russia, they have a negative birthrate. In Russia more people are dying than being born.

The womens rights movement has played a roll in decreased birthrates. Staying home and raising kids is looked down upon by femenist.

Is there really any dispute that it is the feminist agenda that pushed women to delay marriage and start a career?

What is there to be informed about? Nothing in this article is new -- people are remaining single, remaining single longer, or remaining childless by choice. Additionally, the birth rate in the US was teetering around 2.1 IIRC (not time to look it up now so I may be a little off) and within a generation of arriving, the birth rate of immigrants are declining to around that rate too. This phenomenon isn't unique to the US either -- other first-world countries are largely experiencing the exact same thing.

Are you proposing that we force educated people to have more kids?

I'm married, well educated (as is my wife), and we both earn good livings. We have no intention of ever having kids. It isn't my duty to have kids to prop up the economy or to add taxpayers to the population.

Except that they're NOT feminists, they're rabid liberals that accuse any male of rape, regardless of age or sexual orientation.

REAL feminists are supportive of women AND men, and believe that the current movement was taken over by regurgitating fanatics that might as well be classified as mentally ill.

Not my problem. Having kids is a personal choice. Don't like my choice? Have 2 extra kids to replace my wife and I.

Also, I noticed both you and TH dodged the first question -- are you proposing that we force educated people to have kids?

What part of:

"It isn't my responsibility to have kids to prop up the economy or to add to the taxpayer pool" is hard to understand? Talk about selfish -- wanting others who have no desire to have kids of their own to have kids just to effectively foot the bill for you or yours when you're older is the definition of selfish.

Having kids is a personal choice that shouldn't be made lightly. Don't like my choice? Feel free to have 2 additional kids to replace both me and my wife.

I understand your point, and I respect your decisions.

You called the opening post dumb when valid points are being presented. All of the points in the opening post are valid.

Well off people are having less kids. People such as yourself have no kids. Who is having the most kids? Low income families are having kids because there is a financial incentive for them to do so.

20 years from now those welfare kids grow up, have their own kids, live off the system.

40 years from now you and your wife pass away.

Who is going to replace our scientist? Our doctors? Our lawyers? Is it going to be the welfare kids who do not know their daddy, or the kids who are introduced to those lines of work by their parents?

The government has passed so many laws there is no longer an incentive to get married and have kids. The government will pay you to have kids out of wedlock. When you try to provide a stable family you get no help.

The points made in the article are not anything new. The part I resent is the implication that people somehow have a duty to reproduce if for no other reason, to keep the economy running and if they don't, they're somehow "weird" or "not doing their duty and are selfish."

I don't necessarily disagree with what you've written above but it doesn't obligate me to have kids. As a childless by choice couple, we are hounded by others about having kids, etc. Fortunately family members gave up long ago but we still get the occasional questions from coworkers or strangers. The next time we're asked, the wife and I have decided that we'll make up some really gruesome, horrible medical issue that we have which prevents us from having kids just to make those people feel like assholes for nagging us.

You are absolutely correct, you and your wife and not obligated to have children.
