I don't know jack about electricity/wiring/etc, but let's say I have a wireless sensor that's battery-operated by 4xAA's. If I wanted to add like, an LED light or somethign that could illuminate when the batteries were almost dead... is this a simple thing or would it not be worth the effort?

It can be done, but by lighting the led, you will accelerate the demise of the batteries. Check here for some good projects and comments:
