The big thing is that criterion is a company. They usually have good features and quality. I have bought many Criterion products dating back many years to my Laser Disc player.

Criterion is a company that creates special editions of DVDs. Usually have special features like anamorphic transfer (for the earlier movies anyways) and documentaries. Like with Armageddon, you got anamorphic transfer and outtakes. Most of the time Criterion versions are worth the money but sometimes they just is suck, compare the features and ask yourself if it's really worth the extra $15 to $20 to hear the director talk about the movie. Sometimes the improved video transfer alone is worth it though, almost like watching a totally different movie.

Criterion will most times give you the definitive version of a film on DVD or LD including the best picture, extras and analysis of the film. 90% of the time it's well worth spending the extra. Think of them as the Rolls Royce of the DVD industry.

In many cases Criterion DVD's don't actually have that great of a transfer, but they're always packed with extras.
