tech: what's on your monitor?
user: oh, a framed picture of my boyfriend and some sticky notes.

Here's a famous one: (Phone conversation)

User: When I try to do xxx, I get an error message.
Tech: What did the error message say?
User: Oh, I don't remember. I didn't write it down.
Tech: Great, you b!tch. Thanks a lot for giving me something to work with.

Ok sorry...the last line is not something I'd say to the person. :p

yeah.

If you can't trust them, (and generally you can't) they shouldn't have install rights.

No kidding! On all the machines I can I set the users to, well, User! It makes life so much simplier not giving them those abilities.

The exception is two computers for accounting and electronic ordering that needs admin rights. :( I'm working on figuring out CPAU so I can run those programs as Admin and let the rest of the system as User.

nah, I only give it a 4/10. I suppose that's because: "been there, done that" - I've had similar problems with other people who've done almost the same thing. And, I'm not even tech support!

You make that sound like it's a bad thing ..

My boss apparently hosed his WINNT directory on his home computer over the weekend and now I have to see if I can recover pics of his stupid daughter off his desktop that he didn't bother to backup.

In my opinion McAfee is more of a waste of money and time than anything
Norton is junk too

AVG is free and works better than those two any day

So don't worry I won't bug you about problems like that :) Besides, I don't know where you work anyways :)

Thanks for the details. I mean does it come on at ALL? Can you login? Help me out here! Anywhoo, I go over to the computer and it boots into windows and then freezes. Trying to plaster a smile on my face and keep from strangling the sh!t outta him, I tell him to NEVER install anything like that on his machine again. Two antivrus programs on one machine = TROUBLE = more work for me!! User:"Well I needed the firewall capabilities." NO you don't! You have fvcking Windows XP Service Pack 2's firewall. WE have a company firewall. The only reason I can think of is that he wants to make my life a living hell. The next person that comes to my cubicle with a computer problem today is going to feel my wrath! That is all. :|

You're a crappy admin. Users shouldn't even be able to install anything at all.

Are you all reading my responses? I stated waaay back in the post that giving or revoking local admin rights is not up to me. My boss establishes IT policies since he is the IT director. If it were up to me they wouldn't be able to adjust the clock settings. Besides the story has a minor twist to it -- I failed to mention that this user gave his company laptop back so this is one that he purchased himself. So him not being an admin probably isn't an option. Then that brings me to my next belief...if it's not a company machine then we shouldn't have to support it when it breaks. :Q:p
