I see a lot of posters around here advocating vigilante justice, especially against sex offenders.

Elderly Bithlo man beaten to death after being mistaken for sex offender

An elderly Bithlo resident was beaten to death with a black Louisville Slugger baseball bat because the killer mistakenly thought the man was a sex offender, the Orange County Sheriff's Office said.

Deputies arrested 20-year-old Robert Pascale on Thursday on a charge of first-degree murder with a weapon after deputies with dogs tracked him to a muddy pond near Sixth Street in Bithlo, where he was hiding. Pascale was submerged in the water, only his face exposed.

The dead man, Hugh Edwards, 78, had no criminal history. It's unclear why anyone thought he was a sexual offender.

There's more explanation if you click on the link. Not that it justifies anything, but they clearly for whatever reason thought the guy was a sex offender and decided to beat him to death.

Pascale has a violent criminal past and spent two years in a state prison for stealing a car, burglary, robbery with a deadly weapon and battery on a detention-facility staff member, according to the Florida Department of Corrections.

WTF thats nuts. they had nothing to base the fact this guy was a sex offender and yet they killed him? people are nuts.

Looking at the both of their criminal histories from the article, I think you're probably right.

They were just trying to set themselves up with a defense when they asked the lady that question. Too bad they're idiots and all it is going to do is show it was premeditated.

Sure, but it's impossible for these guys to have committed vigilante justice, as there was no justice about what they did.

In what reality do you think you're going to be able to effectively argue that two guys with a history of battery, and one with a history of armed robbery, who illegally break into the home of an old guy with no criminal history over the course of his 78-year lifespan have committed vigilante justice by beating him to death with a baseball bat?

Well they thought it was justifiable obviously. So if the argument is intent ("I feel I'm serving justice" rather than "I'm going to kill rob and kill this guy"), then these guys clearly were vigilantes who screwed up bad. Hence, vigilante justice is a bad idea.

I'll give you that. The first thought is the average Joe taking the law into his hands. Not career criminals. Maybe they were part of a community watch.

Members of community watch programs and others who use legal means of bringing people to justice are not considered vigilantes. For example, in 1979 Curtis Sliwa founded the Guardian Angels in New York City, a recognized crime fighting organization that now has chapters in many other cities.

In other words, the 78-year-old victim would still be alive today if some vigilante had taken out the criminal who murdered him.

When most of the people "advocate" vigilante justice here, I don't think they mean it.

Still, it's a clear sign that people don't think the justice system is doing its job. At least from my experience as a Canadian where the courts can be vary secretive. Lots of accusations of coddling criminals.
