Don't. The chip is a joke. Don't believe me? Take a gander at the few dozen threads in here that list pages and pages of evidence.

If a person is interested in gaming then buying a FX5200 or R9200 or any budget video card is a waste of money. However not everyone is into gaming and the FX5200 is ideal for people like that. Remember that there will also be DX9 software which isn't game related!

Best 3 budget cards are the GF3 Ti200, GF4 Ti4200 and Radeon 8500/9100, all better than the GF FX5200.

I forgot about it. True. Next microsoft's OS is going to require DX9 capabilities, isn't it?

Why is the Geforce FX 5200 considered so bad? I am asking this because i have not used it or tried it as yet.Is it worse than the Geforce 4 MX440?

The reason why it's considered to be so bad is because it's DX9 performance is poor. People think that it should outperform the ti4200 but they fail to understand that the fx5200 was released to replace the gf4 mx440 and everything lower.

The fx5200 ultra I have been testing performs much more like a ti4200 but still has quite poor DX9 performance if 3dmark 03 is accurate.

heck this thing pwns my moms voodoo3 and the ati mach64 that my grandparents use. it probably smashes the voodoo5 i used up untill january this year. their is ALWAYS a place in the market for a card like the 5200. nvidia will sell alot more of these than the 5900. and if you think that is bad, some pcs are still shipping with Rage 128s!

your grafix card purchase depends on what you are going to do with it.

I dont understand why people rag on the 5200. It is supposed to replace the GF4 MX. You know the DX7 card????

9000/9100/9200 better than the 5200? ROTFLMAO!

A castrated 8500 is about as ugly of a ducking as they come.

Nice Af implementation lololololol

For the money I agree there are other things I'd be aiming at as a budget gamer, but as Schadenfroh and some of you guys know I just won one of these, to be shipped Friday.

I find the user reviews on the EVGA GeForce FX5200 ULTRA at newegg to be very interesting.

On the other hand, the next day's winner won an FX5900 Ultra 256MB 256-bit DDR VIVO that goes for about $450 *sigh*

Well, the card clearly sucks for any hard core gamers...but true, there are other things that require dx9, and for that it could be great. It could be good in several other cirumstances too--those circumstances just don't involve gaming. The 5200 is bound to sell tons, just because it's the cheapest dx9 card on the market and people are quick to assume that since it has dx9 it MUST perform well in games. Funny that in those reviews people say it keeps up well with the ti4200. According to the benchmarks the only time it does is when you enable AA/AF. For the extra $40 a 5200ultra definitley should outperform a ti4200 in basically all situations.

If owning a DX9 card is still an issue for you in 2005, you REALLY need to upgrade.

9100 should be faster on some games, and the 9000P is basically tied in plain rendering. ATi parts should be faster with AF but slower with AA. I value AF more than AA, though, so that may bias me toward the 9100 that I own simply bacause AA isn't an issue for me at this price point.

Nice Af implementation lololololol
Sure, you try running trilinear AF on your 5200 and see how smoothly it runs. nV's and ATi's AF hijinks in UT2K3 should be a clear example of how trilinear is still too costly with AF.
