now if someone would explain that to the grad guys at UF. I was talking to them about grad school and the advisor told me that the program for CS and CE (from software dept) are the same exact curriculum. That was very disturbing and caused me to greatly reduce them in my standings of picks for grad school.

The UW computer science major is EXTREMELY tough to get into....

I'm having second thoughts at going to UW is the fact you don't choose majors till junior year and that the CS department is close to impossible to enter...

yea it is pretty hard to get into... but not impossible. you can always try to get admission straight from HS, if you want the guarantee... you have to have pretty good HS grades for that though.

from their website:

Early Decision (Autumn Quarter only)
The UW Department of Computer Science & Engineering enrolls up to 10% of its incoming class directly out of high school. Freshmen applicants to the University of Washington listing Computer Science or Computer Engineering as their intended major, and who are Washington State residents, will be automatically considered. Competitive applicants will have taken or be taking calculus. Physics is the preferred high school laboratory science course.

Yes, it's tough, but if it's what you want to do, you'll find a way to get in. Where did you hear about "don't choose majors till junior year?" You can declare your major whenever you want, provided you meet the major's requirements. However, if you don't have a major after a certain number of credits, you'll be on academic probation. I had to get an extension so I wouldn't be placed on probation because I was a community college transfer student.

The best advice I can give you is DO NOT transfer from a community college after two years to UW to get into CSE. It's more difficult to do and you waste a lot of time, especially if the courses you took at the community college do not transfer over.

I take it you're a high school student. Send me a PM if you want more info about the CSE department at UW.

Ahh UW.

Whenever I mention this to my American firends, the first thing that pop into their minds is University of Washington. You didn't happen to graduate from Waterloo did you?

I agree. There are of majors where you could transfer from a two year college to a four year to finish yoru degree. You can do it for all majors, but it really is not a good idea if you intend to take engineering. Not only will the transition be a huge difference (big 4 year colleges teach so much differently than small 2 year), but lots of colleges also have their own General Engineering classes that are not available at other schools.
