I went out the other day and bought myself a golden orb. This for a socket 7 w/k6-2 400mhz chip... In fact the guy at the counter said i was the only guy he'd ever seen who wanted a decent cooler for a socket 7 chip....
to make a long story short, The socket 370 golden orb *will* fit on a socket 7 chip. However there are some things to consider.
The footprint of the 370 golden orb is slightly smaller than the core of the CPU... so for major OCing it may not be the best solution for the socket seven. However, for minor overclocking and just general cooling I think that this would be a quite acceptable and capable heatsink.
The only problem i ran into was my motherboard design. I'm running an ASUS p5a, and the plug for the atx power sits *right* next to the socket for the cpu. The unfortunate thing about this is that the orb sticks over about 6-8 of the pins. (about 1/8" clearance from socket to gOrb). Now i think that this could be fixed by taking a small chunk out of the HSF with a dremel or like tool, but frankly i didn't feel like trying it at this point, since i spent 25 on it (that's why retail sucks)...
however, several other socket 7 motherboards do not have that problem, for instance the CPU is some distance from the plug... and I don't see any reason that the orb wouldn't sit on the chip.
I haven't had a chance to test the chrome orb, for the socket A on it yet, but if i have a chance (and a different mainboard) I'll give it a fling and let you know what happens.
