For all you m/t drivers out there...can you shift without the clutch?

Just wondering..I can (usually)..it's really easy on my car, though -- basically locked out of gear until revs match, then it slips right in. I've caught a slight grind several times, but it usually goes nice & smooth..now that I've caught on. Didn't take long to pick up once I actually tried..never had the guts to try until a friend (Nissan fan-boi! :Q) did it w/o any problem at all.

None of these "You're going to tear your tranny apart" comments...it's not that bad 😛

if you do it just right, it doesnt harm anything, at least thats what i've been told 😛, i can do it from like 3rd to 4th, rarely do it, just a novelty type of thing....

BUT it only takes one mis and you blow not only the trans but the engine. And if you are not 100% perfect it will put more wear and tear on teh gear and sync's, so don't think just becuase it seems fine it is.

This is why I would NEVER buy a jap. car from someone under 25.

Um, no. It's not going to blow the transmission and the engine...no way it'll damage the engine unless you slam it into a severely wrong gear (ie second at 80mph)..and it won't want to go in anyways.

With my car (Corolla), it's basically locked out until revs match, then it slips in beautifully.

Eh..you can do it with pretty much any manual transmission..not just Japanese..

Not the best thing to do for your transmission but it can be done and is okay if done correctly. You either have to do it extremely quick or let it glide in. Simply let off the gas a bit and it should grab the gear no problem. You need a good shifter to ensure you can do this properly. Usually stock shifters don't have the action necessary. And your clutch will love you since you never use it.

If you do it right, it will be wearing your synchros and your clutch less....

How'd you know i have a Jap. car?!??! haha, anyways, my current car isnt even a MANUAL, yet it is a "jap" (toyota), only time i did it was in my bro's 89 300zx, which was a POS, so it didnt matter if i messed up or anything, and by the time i got done learning i did it perfect everytime, so no worries 😉

Unless you're downshifting...then letting off the gas won't help any.. 😉

With mine, I can keep some (not a whole lot) of pressure on the shifter while letting the engine slow down (after revving it up), and it slips right in at the proper speed.

My race Civic that I had five years ago had a transmission with no synchros (like most race transmissons).... so, yeah, I only used the clutch for a dead stop. Otherwise, just match the RPMs with the throttle and shift (I even marked the shift points on my tach/speedo).

Most street cars, however, you won't see MUCH benefit... you'd be better off double clutching. Plus, shifting a street car without the clutch.... argh. While a *perfect* shift isn't any more taxing to your transmission/clutch, a botched one can significantly reduce the life... usually of the synchros (they're forced to compensate for the incompetence of the driver).

Yeah..it's not incredibly useful for everyday driving, but I thought I'd learn just for the heck of it. Just something interesting to show people who've never seen it before, I guess..

clutchless shifting is just for stubborn people who think they are shifting better than a clutch shift...

it's not better JUST BECAUSE ITS HARDER....don't think you're "accomplishing" something by shifting without depressing the clutch....

Who said it's better because it's harder? Keep your rolling eyes to yourself until you actually make sense.

it's a bad fvcking idea in the first place....so whats the point in doing it??? if you're doing it you're obviously trying to accomplish something...you're either best case scenario shifting the car just as a depressing of the clutch would do or worst case scenario fvcking up your tranny.... u do the math

Ever have a clutch go out? My dad's clutch cable broke a few years back..so it's not a completely useless thing to know.

Again, I ask that you quote where someone said it's better because it's harder..

Push-start it and avoid red lights 🙂
