i once heard that people in Germnay usually start work around 10AM. now, i know not everyone there starts at 10, but i heard that most do. in the US, most of us start at 8AM and finish at 5PM on a typical day. again, there are the exceptions. but i'm talking "in general".

my question is: what are the start and end times for most workers in Europe? fyi, i'm curious because one of my professional studies is human resources and i'm interested in working hours and how that relates to leisure time and culture. thanx!

Cliffs:

1) pick a European country or countries
2) tell me when the majority of the workers start work (time, not age)
3) tell me when the majority of the workers end work.

You cannot possibly generalise that - flextime

Where I work, the workers start around 06:30-07:30 am and leave 15:30 - 16:30, The higher up ones start from 06:00-10:00 and leave from 17:00-00:00

In the tertiary sector of Germany and Switzerland, I think 8-12am/1-5pm are the most common work times. I've heard that in Spain people like long midday breaks. 8-12/2-6 should be more common there.

There are no laws of start/finish times, but sometimes additional night shift laws exist. Companies often establish "core worktime" (e.g 9-12/2-4) where office workers have to be present, but it's their decision when to work for the rest of the time.

LMAO @ your ignorance!

so here in Jersey (NOT the american jersey... 'old' Jersey, if you will) hours are generally 9 -> 5 or equivalent with flexitime. On average we get 4 weeks+ per year holiday (vacation).

A friend of mine's average hours are 4AM-1PM. He is an American. Where does he fit in with your crazy little scheme? :p

1.) The Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany
2.) Between 7 and 9 if you work in an office, variable time if you're on shifts.
3.) Between 4 and 6, variable time if you're on shifts.

I used to start at 8 and get out at 5.

What I love about some parts of Europe, is that the lunch hours (yes, 2 hours), are spent on the sidewalk bistros, having snacks and cocktails. :)

Attention Vegitto, both mine and ndee's sentences weren't written in normal German but in a Swiss dialect.

Thanks for the correction. I've read about a survey where it turns out the Spaniards get the fewest time to sleep of all Europeans, because of their daily routine.

In Germany, I would say most people work 9:00 to 18:00 with a one-hour lunch break, Monday through Thursday (32 hours) and 9:00 to 16:00 on Friday with a one-hour lunch break (5 hours). Hence their 38-hour work week. These are the hours we keep at my office, and I work for the government. Some 50% of German employees work for the state in some capacity.
