I agree, not contributing to the thread.

But they speak the truth... my cousins (plural - '96 passat, '99 jetta) had NUMEROUS electrical problems that showed up after 2 years of ownership.
I won't be considering one for my next auto purchase.

Heh, I'm not contributing either 😛
<-- laughs emphatically as Triumph tries to defend VW, and await's vi_edits entrance 😉

When you're in the business the idea is to have a satisfied customer
in fact the name of my dealership was "Satisfaction Motors"
I agree that VW quality has improved but they STILL have major chinks in their armor.
I recommend you getting a Consumers Guide and checking out the frequency of repair record
and bringing it to a mechanic to have it checked out.
It's funny how when a car is sold oftentimes the new owner
ends up with some major expenses in short order.
Either that, or as was suggested sell it and get another vehicle.
But, he's getting the vehicle for *free* - Do you really think that he needs to go through all this research? This poor thread has gotten way off topic. The poor originator of this thread had a few questions about the cooling system and whether the outstanding recalls would be honored once he took ownership of the car. Now, the thread is all crapped up with people saying VW sucks, check it out before buying it, etc. Once again, the car is *free* - How many of you would pass on a *free* car whether it was a VW, or any vehicle for that matter?

I've never owned a VW. However, I do know many people who do own them. They are no less reliable than any other vehicle on the road today. The only negative thing that I've heard about them is that the method in which the cars are assembled, makes some of the engine repairs quite hard. However, as many new vehicles change radically in their designs, we're going to see more issues like this with all vehicles. As the manufacturers try to make designs that will attract us, they'll be shoe-horning those engines and transaxles in there - and who knows how complicated the maintenance might be.
