For all the Asians out there?. Got a question.

I went out with the girl who is beautiful and very smart. She is Asian and moved to the US in her teens. She is now 30 and thought you find someone that seems interesting and you get married THEN learn about them. She has only had 1 boyfriend and her family was very protective so no dating in HS and the only reason she had a boyfriend was that was in college for a short time. She is 30 and knows NOTHING about dating, as dating is what you do after marriage. Needless to say I was shocked and thought no one would think like this after being ?free? here in the US. So we spent a lot of time talking about relationships and what we each wanted from someone. She thought she scared me off as she said out right she wants a husband. But I told her of my mom?s first husband that she married and thought she knew him. Well he turned out to be a drinker and abused her. So I think I opened her eyes a little, but in the end may have scared her now.

So is this still the norm for Asian families that grew up in the US, but had parents from other countries? Or???

this sounds more rare than likely. most asians i know don't have super protective parents. that's why there were like 40% at my university. and i never saw any of my friends having problems dating or being restricted from doing so.

regardless, if you're dating this girl and you're still interested, go for it and teach her well. 🙂

This seems pretty common for a traditional asian person. I don't understand how she could still think this way after coming here in her teens though. I mean, unless she hung around other sheltered asians, she would should have realized its not the same here in the US.

i think it's somethign that goes back to the days of arranged marriages.. where you basically meet someone.. then marry them, and then learn who they are... the chinese culture is very traditional in things like dating and relationships.. they dont' have arranged marriages of course.. well some of them do i'm sure, but you know what i mean.. for the most part, people in her situation will have a lot more strict parents and a family that is more protective of her.. for people in my situation (one generation after her, born here from parents in her situation) the parents are a lot more relaxed about dating and relationships, although they still have the stigmas, they don't act upon them.. well.. for the most part...................

Yea I want to see her more. But was just alarmed by how sheltered her life has been. She even said everything she did was to please her father. So getting A's was a must, no dating, etc...

I am a nice guy so I am not looking at just "banging" her and running, but I know a TON of guys that would hurt someone like her very badly. So I was just whondering, as I know some here talk about their protective parents, is this still the norm for some?
She was born in Vietnam.

Watch out. If you wanna bang her, you're gonna have to face off her father's/relatives who know martial arts. They are BADASS... plus if you're not asian, you're pwned by the family. Family will give you a hard time and HER a hard time if you two do date. Sad, but true. It's a natural defense kinda thing.

Sadly, I've been finding that most Asian marriages are out of "comfort." Meaning they search for quailities like good job, good education, good family background. Because these items will ensure success for a comfortable life. Once this person is found, then they learn to love them afterwards.

With the high divorce rate in this country, "love" is over rated. 😀
