I save because I don't like working full-time and hope to eventually live comfortably off the interest and an enjoyable part-time job (20-30 hours)... but yeah, might be a while. I had this great savings plan worked out, but then I decided I don't like my current line of work (IT), so I'm switching to a part-time library job (or two) while I get a master's degree in library science.

that's funny... I'm doing almost exactly the same thing :p

I work in IT. I've been saving money so that I can start going to grad school part-time to get a degree in MLIS. also, it's good to have money stashed away for unexpected circumstances (like if my company were to bottom-out tomorrow, I have enough money in savings that I could probably do OK for 4-5 months without a job)
Which program are you thinking about? I'm doing an accredited distance program 'cause there aren't any in my state.

I'll add that I am also a spender, because I make a decent living and I'll be damn if I live like a pauper today just in case some <lawyer, doctor, children, addiction> cleans my portfolio before I can enjoy it.

my company is relocating me to New Brunswick at the end of the month (thank god! I'm counting down the days till I no longer work in Newark, NJ). it just so happens that the Rutgers New Brunswick campus seems to have a pretty solid MLIS program.

I save cause I don't want to eat sawdust when I get old , or need a surgury that I can't pay for or drugs for treatment.

Don't most banks have like a $25 minimum? Or is it just mine? (I realize you were exaggerating a bit, but I'm curious.)

No.. in fact most banks love it when you have LESS than $0.

My wife and I saved up for our first house.

Ever since we bought our house, our savings practices became a habit.

I just enjoy life. If that means being in debt then so be it. I could die tomorrow and thankfully I have a life insurance policy and some savings I can leave behind. I guess I want to enjoy life more than anything. I do that by enjoying things such as computers, family and friends.

Our income is comfortably above our expenses. We don't set aside a dollar amount per se, it just accumulates. Niether one of us is into buying expensive crap or chasing the latest in technology. Take plasma and HDTV for example. We watch a couple of hours of tube a night, if that. It is simply not worth it to plunk down thousands for that. We'd rather take more vacations:D

Because the day will come when I turn 55... and I don't want to work anymore after that.

Why save? So I don't take it in the ass when something happens. Life is full of surprises and I save because I don't want to lose everything if some incident comes up.

Dad was terrible with money for a very long time. He still is in a lot of ways. It made it very difficult, so I learned to save my money.

I enjoy having the money more than spending it. We live very comfortably and have nice things but we tend to save WAY more than most people we know.

I aggressively put money into my 401k. Beyond that, I honestly don't spend much money - rent, bills, and occasionally for things I "need" (replacing ripped clothes, etc). I have everything I want, just not the best model. (Used furniture, hand me down stereo, 5 year old computer). There isn't anything really that I want that I don't have - so in the meantime I am just saving on a downpayment for a house.

Like other posts: I am not 'saving', I am investing my excess cash.
