I had to make a call to a car dealership last night after the service guy had told my fiance it was going to cost her over $500 for a mandatory 30,000 mile routine maintenance check-up to keep her car under warranty. This seemed completely ridiculous to me, as I know they just look under the hood, change the oil, and rotate the tires. Well, the service guys she talked to had left for the evening, so this poor girl at the dealership had to hear my rant about it.

Anyway, I told her that unless they are going to make sweet sweet love to the car, there is no way it should cost that much, so please tell me what exactly I would be getting for my $500+. She clearly had no idea what to say, so she put me on hold for a minute and then came back, slowly reading through a list she looked up, "Well, uh... they will check the spark plugs and the battery, and uh... change the oil... and, uh.. well, it's a pretty, uh, exorbitant inspection."

I had to laugh at this, and then I say, "Yes, I agree with you completely. It sounds very exorbitant to charge over $500 for what I must have done for state inspections that cost only $40 anyway. I think the word you were looking for was comprehensive, but ironically you hit the nail right on the head."

i didn't say it was wrong necessarily. it just annoys me. same with myriad, it has become accepted as an adjective, but was originally only to be used as an adjective in prose.

I'm here playing devils advocate for a reason. Language is fluid; it is like a flowing river. Placing a dam in the river doesn't stop the water from coming. Instead, the dam causes a massive backlog of problems.

I feel that we should embrace the changes within the language. Let "myriad" become a common adjective instead of just a noun. Don't try to block the change. I suggest you try sitting back and watch in awe at the beauty of a flowing language.

Think how boring language would be if we weren't allowed to bend and stretch it. Say goodbye to your thesarus because there is only one proper word for each application.

Dullard got the sherbert, here's the myriad (an adjective as well as a noun). It''s been an adjective for 200 years. I think it's here to stay.

So this guy goes to the shrink, and says doc, I've been having some really weird dreams. Last night I dreamt I was a tee pee, and the night before, I dreamt I was a wig wam. The answer to your problem is simple, said the shrink. You're two tents. 😉
