Shhhhhhh! :) I still haven't pressed the buy button yet! (looking to see if there is a camera case for the g2...)

hell many cell phones cost 400+ nowdays. mine has a retail of 399 alone and i don't care really. its pretty solid, metal casing and all, no worries about it in a pocket. thats what its made to do.
Oh man, you guys aren't helping lol. I was set on the G2 I tell you damnit!!!! :p

btw i have an s230:p thats why i know what i know:)

Go for it and get the G2.
It will get you into photography more than S400.
Granted S400 is a nice camera but it just can't compare to G2 feature wise.
With S400, you are more or less stuck in P&S mode.
With G2, the feature will not be a limiting factor in case you learn more about photography.
Beside, once you have use swivel LCD you will never go back.
Talk about convenience in shooting angle.

wow, so much misinformation in this thread

I don't know a whole lot about the differences but I think it's mainly just the lack of some manual functions on the G2. Shutter speed, focus, etc. Could be wrong though.

I do know that a comparison I saw between the two had the G2 with a very marginal advantage over the S400. I went with the S400 since the G2's only slightly better and a fair amount bigger. I've had my S400 about 4 days and I love it. Even though I'm only about 5% of the way to actually being proficient with the thing :p

Review sites state the G2 has a manual focus. I thought it had a manual shutter speed too, but all i can find is 15 second to 1/1000 of a second speeds..

the g2 has everything the s400 has and then a bunch more. the g2 has full control control over aperture, shutter speed, and focus. the s400 has little manual control when compared to the range that the g-series cameras provide. in addition to the more controls, the g2 has a much better lens, f2-f2.5 when compared to the s400's f2.8-f4.9 (IIRC) over the same zoom range. also, the g2 has very good battery life, much better than the s400. dont forget the flip out lcd either.

The G2/G3 allows easy apeture and shutter settings. The little dial on front right controls these along with manual focus, if you choose to use these feature. I think its even easier than using a normal SLR.

the g2 does not have the dial on the front. only the g3 and g5 have it.

Whoa, the G2 is unavailable on Dell's website... I hope I got in on this deal.

ROTC1983, have fun with your new toy! :)

BTW, did you (or others who have this camera) order a bag yet for it? What bag? I was thinking of a Crumpler but I'm not sure which one would fit it...

From the Dell deal: a Canon G2 and a Kingston 256MB compactflash card (less 10% less $40 off the total) for $410.82. The compactflash card also had a $15 rebate... +free shipping for all. A good deal I think, still beats the price of a S400 even if I buy a small camera bag.

ROTC1983, hrmm... well I'm looking for a camera bag at eBags. Sorta tedious to look and compare the sizes of the bags to the cameras but some threads at dpreview are helping. Btw, your G2 in black looks damned nice.

Thanks for the link kyutip!

stay away from a G2 if your an avid hiker/backpacker. I have one and regret it now cause its too big.
its a great camera dont get my wrong just isnt the smallest and lightest thing around (i have a lensmate on mine).
