for a first time pc builder.... do i need a removable mobo tray

in my ongoing research for my new pc, my current question is:

should i pay the extra whatever for a removable mobo tray so as to help me out when setting up the pc. i dont really know too much about the proper placement of the cpu,(thermal paste etc) and how to mount the power supply though everything else i do understand for the most part (ran, pci devices, etc)

and if yes, what do you recommend, lower price is good , but quality is definelty wanted

thanks for your help

I don't think it is necessary to have a removable motherboard tray, unless you plan on pulling it out once a week.

You might not need it, but you will probably appreciate it afterwards. All depends on what size case and mobo you're going for. Trying to fit my Kt7a-RAID mobo into my mid-tower was an interesting task, it fit, just the way the powersupply was and the overall shape of the case, just being able to snap a side panal in would be much more fun.

If you don't get one of those small cases with the sideways power supply that hangs over the motherboard :|, then you'll be okay without a removeable tray.

In the 2 PCs I've built, one case had a removeable tray, and the other did not. I have to admit that it was easier to wrok with the removeable tray, but it wasn't terribly more difficult to install the mobo in the case that didn't have a removeable tray. I wouldn't worry about it. Focus on getting a guality case.

Installing a mobo into alot of cases becomes a task sometimes since they are either too small or cramped in areas. I wouldn't pay extra for a case just cause it has a mobo tray. If you want to use the case over and over, just pay a bit more now to get a great case with everything that you want(ie. Aluminum, usb hub, firewire, extra spots for fans, window, mobo tray, etc) and then it will be something of quality that will last you for awhile. I usually do that with a new upgrade and then I buy another case and put my older machine into that.. hehe gives me a reason to clean the whole thing out too.

I just got a case with a lot of space inside when I built my first PC,it did not have a removable tray but I remember I installed the board ok,I also installed the ram and CPU/Heatsink on the motherboard outside of the case to make it easier for installation(personal choice doing this).

I would get something with no sharp edges like Antec/Chieftec range which are great cases.

with the slide out tray if your not careful and forget about the length of front panel wires when changing a drive you can damage things.:|
no more trays for me.

Yeah, it's not necessary at all I think...

Unless you are running some kind of setup where you're constantly testing and comparing components (like for a review website or something), I don't think a slide out tray is really ever neccessary.
