For $600, what Intel based parts will u get?

Hi, I need cpu, moboard, ram, videocard, harddrive.

I don't need a cdrw, dvdrom, case, floppy.

I want 512mb DC ram, 80GB harddrive, if possible i want R9800p

need to be ready to OC....

any ideas?

What do you do with the computer ? And why only Intel parts ? Unless you already know why you need Intel hardware, then why even ask us anything, since then you should know what you need ?

First off, RAM is not "dual channel." Your motherboard needs to be "dual channel" and your RAM should be two sticks of the same stuff, and you'll have "dual channel" throughput.

Secondly, you're looking at:

80GB WD 800JB: $72
Radeon 9600 XT 128MB: $153 ($174 for 256MB version)
2 x 256MB PC 4000 DDR RAM: ~$150
P4 2.8C: $180
P4C800-E Deluxe: $175

Total: $730

Or, substitute the CPU for an Athlon XP-M 2500+: $93
And the mobo for an Abit AN7: $109

Total: $577

I'm tired of talking to people on budgets about why they should get AMD over Intel. Get whatever you want, but STOP ASKING FOR ADVICE IF YOU DON'T LIKE THE ANSWER.

(sorry, not directed at you, just frustration in general)

ok, just ask for a friend, he said he prefer intel, don't know why. I do know that AMD is better for people on a budget .

I can see that the moboard is very expensive(P4C800E dx)
for ram, just read from shakyextreme's highend memory guide... There they have Geil Ultra Platinum 2x256mb PC4200, is it a good choice?
for $149
any substitute for that?

no that i don't like the answer, just want to get in more je...

You can get something cheaper than the P4C800E, probably by $75. You also don't need Dual Channel...especially if you're going to OC. That should save you another $70. Or you could also apply the memory savings to Ilmater's AMD setup, but anyways, you should be able to hit your $600 budget sans 9800Pro. Don't know why you need to OC, but if you dont, go for the Dell 400SC for around $300 AR. You can always try the software OC, but YMMV.

AMD != better for people on a budget

AMD = better for people on ANY budget.

tell your friend he is a moron and needs to step outside of the plain intel closed door world and see that there are faster processors for cheaper.

Allthough I agree with what you are trying to say, There are a lot of people out there that got burned with AMD K6-2/ALI chipset/ATI Rage combos because they were "cheap" that turned out to be unstable, unreliable junk and will never go the AMD route again. Trust me, I see this firsthand at work. We had some K6-2 machines built by some guy and they were all junk. Over time I replaced all of them with Intel based machines running Nvidia vid cards. Guess what..? No more problems. To this day, I could not sell my employer on another AMD machine if I gave it to him. Even though that is what I personally run at home.

replace that mobo with a P4P8X-SE for $79.90-ish and end up around $635 total.

Hmmm...that doesn't sound fanboyish at all now does it? AMDs are faster for some things...Intels are for others. Don't act like AMD chips are faster in every aspect because that makes YOU the moron. Don't bring up price either because the new A64's are almost the exact same price as their Intel equivalents. I got an A64 simply because I game a lot...but other people have other needs so don't flame this guy.

Please!! I had many lock ups in the old days with intel. To many. It was software back then, crap sf, crap mem and no good standards all my blue screens were on intel platforms not AMD's of the last 4 years.. Do I blame Intel? nope even though they raped us on price I understood it was ms or some crappy hardware I had running.

Everyone today still bags on via of old... guess what, you can't find one review here citing instablity of the kt266/333/400 and you def can't find one of the AMD prcessor or nforce.

With the Athlon XP line half the price as intel to me it's still not a good idea to go with intel nowadays with equal performance and proof marketing has an effect on weak minded. Who in thier right mind would pay more for the same?

Please yourself pal...Hmm, What was I running at home when we got the K6-2 on ALI chipset machines? K6-2's on VIA chipsetted boards. And yes, I had many less problems than the ALI-based junkers at work. Did I replace the AMD machines at work with Intel because of what I wanted? No. They were replaced with Intel by thier request. Just so happened to work better than the AMD machines. Luck? Maybe. Same with ATI rage cards and thier infamous crappy drivers. Replaced ATI rage's with TNT2 Ultras' and many many problems solved. Would I reccomend AMD now? Hell ya. Would I reccomend ATI now? Duh.. My point was that Some people's minds cannot be changed no matter what you say and will stick with Intel.

For under $600, you should probably go with Athlon XP (M?) and an nForce2 mobo. That will allow you to get that 9800 Pro.

They want a Radeon 9800 Pro, the only systems that even offer that option are the XPS, 8300, and 4600. All of which are beyond the $600 range. For a hardware forum, AT has a lot of people who just want to buy a Dell. I don't quite get that...

wth you talking about? just look through hotdeals : a 4600 2.8/800 w/ 9800 pro and a 17"LCD was $680 free ship last week... just can't beat that for an intel 865-based sys

a Athlon 64 3000+ is more than a 2.8E(or even 3.0E, C)

is it really faster than it is?

Gaming, encoding, I know AMD is slower on encoding...

Divx count as encoding, rite?

i mean plaing Divx count as encoding, rite?

replace that mobo with a P4P8X-SE for $79.90-ish and end up around $635 total.

The P4P8X-SE is a terrible OCer, so you could ditch the PC4000 memory as well. PC3500 would be much more appropriate for this budget. For gaming, id highly reccomend scraping together cash for a 256bit memory bus (NOT 256MB!) card.

Also consider that the NV40 release party is in 8 days, that might dramatically effect current prices.

The Athlon 64s are slightly faster than the equivalent intel pentium 4 C.
Athlon 64s are faster for gaming.
Encoding DIVX (creating divx movies) intel is faster at.
For DIVX playback a 700mhz pentium 3 is more than enough 😛

The Athlon 64 3000+ is faster at everything than the 2.8 except "encoding" I'm not even sure exactly what qualifies as encoding. And its not that much slower in encoding. I want the response in games and things that require immediate response. I can wait a few seconds for the "encoding" to finish.
