Football vs Rugby

The recent thread about Football and Soccer and the subsequent and quite obvious statement that football was a pussified form of rugby reminded me of a study done that was referenced by a radio host on ESPN radio (Mike Golek from mike and mike). He said that in this study they determined that rushing 30 times in the NFL is equivalent to hopping on a high powered motorcycle with your street clothes on (no helmet or anything) and running into your garage door at the top speed achievable 300 times from 30 feet away.

I played high school football, even went to a couple college scouting camps (didn't really want to play college ball, knew that going in went for fun, I personally didn't want to invest my college life in football when I knew I wasn't good enough to go anywhere afterwards.) I also played in a local rugby league. Let me tell you right now, I would gladly get hit in rugby 10 times before I would take a hit from a dominant beast of a linebacker after running a slant route in the middle. The padding gives you a sense of invincibility, and that feeling allows guys that love to hit (for foreigners please go to Youtube and search for John Lynch, case in point right there) to absolutely put 150% of their power behind a hit in honest hopes to crush you and make you scared to come at them again. Now SOME rugby players may feel that way, but there is no way all of them do, with no padding you are all too aware of your own vulnerability.

rugby is just as intense and more fun than football. it is much faster paced. the lack of that invincivble feeling you stated is made up for the fact that there are NO pads and it is somewhat more painful to take a big hit than with pads. Without rugby there would be no football. I like both, but I think rugby is much more fun.

Oh I mean you are completely entitled to the opinion that rugby is more fun, everyone is. I personally enjoy football much more, that's just my opinion though. What we are trying to end is the statement that Football is for "pussies" and Rugby is for real men. I really think that they are both sports that require immense physical strain and punishment. What I was stating is that the "invincible feeling" does not make football better, it simply makes the pads vs no pads things irrelevant. the guys on the other team know you have pads on, so they go for anywhere that is vulnerable. In the end I am looking for admittance that they draw. That neither is better than the other overall.

right, they are different sports. People should realize that rugby isn't football without pads. It's totally different. You can't even throw the ball forwards in rugby. It's really not like anything.

Can't you get seriously injured playing rugby?? I'm assuming your only protection is a cup.

lol. That's right, people never get seriously injured in the NFL. If we overlook the many hundreds of serious injuries that occur every year, the multiple events of players being paralyzed from full speed head to head contact, the occasional death, you would be exactly right. In fact when I was playing high school ball a team we played every year had this amazing freshman running back. The year before he rushed for like 1500 yards and many many touchdowns. One day during a normal practice he run right up the middle only to be met by the middle linebacker and the strong safety who hit him at the same time from both sides. The impact was SO severe his heart stopped immediately and he died on the field. That team lost every game they played until that class he was in graduated and the pain finally left. The best analogy is this, sure a lot of cars have a 5 star crash rating and all around air bags, but when you get hit by a train on the driver side that was doing 60 miles an hour, does it really matter?

On a side note I've known maybe one guy the whole time I;ve been playing football that wore a cup. I can't really explain why but football players don't wear em. I never wore one and not once did I have the opportunity to regret it.

yes you can get seriously injured. I never wore a cup and most of the team didnt either. Actually, rugby has less injuries than football and hockey combined.
