Football is officially ruined.

I thought this thread would be about the Power 5 breakaway in college football.

The NFL has wrapped QB in bubble wrap for years. Adding the WR to that pile is not a surprise. Touchdowns are what brings in the bucks.
 
Actually, the league is probably worried about all the players that have been injured and permanently disabled and are just beginning to enforce rules that have been in place for a while. The brain injury thing isn't done yet and the NFL, try as they might, may not be able to prevent many, MANY former players from suing with liabilities into the many billions.

There's a lot of 'fans' that champion the idea that the NFL should be a gladiatorial game with a constant flow of new players to replace the ones crippled or killed. We've even had the idea of the NFL as gladiatorial game mentioned right here in this very thread. But, just so we're know what we're talking about here let's review:

Gladiators had short lives and died in violence for the entertainment of the masses.

Are we to expect todays athletes to work for more than a decade to develop there skills, build there body, and dedicate there lives with little opportunity beyond the game only to say to them ... kill or be killed?

There's no reason the game can't live on the skills of the players, why do we need to have so many injured? What pleasure do you get from watching someone knocked unconscious from a blind side tackle? What joy do you get watching someone get there leg destroyed by a low tackle? Should chainsaws be legal?

Lot of sick f's around here.

Well, a lot of us grew up watching "hard nosed football", and that doesn't exist today. The league is attempting to put player safety as an important aspect of the game, and that generally comes with a "no huge, unprotected hits" rule enforcement. I will admit, I used to love seeing a receiver run a slant, because that just meant he was getting laid out if he caught the ball over the middle. Players can't live for long in a league like that.

After the 43 - 8 beating, stomping, trouncing, flogging, trampling, humiliation, etc... Whatever you want to call it in the SB, you know why they're now ”enforcing” this rule. You should see some of the calls, just plain ridiculous.

In case you want to forget, 43 - 8. Never forget!

Edit: to clarify, the rule is not new, the penalties are new, and how they're enforcing it.

Im guessing the NFL will barely even exist in 20yrs. Hopefully hockey takes over. It's much more exciting and requires much more skill.

while i find hockey highly entertaining and am a fan, to say it requires more skill is just asinine. they both require tons of skill in different ways, some harder than the other in each sport. it's much harder to get 11 players on a team on the same page for 1 play than it is to get 5 players on the same page for a play during a hockey game, which rarely happens (designed plays with all 5 players).

i'd also argue that the qb position in the nfl is the hardest position in any professional sport out there.

Agreed.


OP: You have to remember, this is Preseason. They call every single penalty they see in preseason, they have done this for many, many years. This is to get everyone on the same page (meaning not just the players, but also the officials, the crews controlling the chains, time, loudspeaker, everything). The refs are specifically told to call absolutely everything, including things that could've gone either way, or things that they wouldn't normally call in the regular season.

Let it go, wait until the real football starts, and everything will be A-OK. Yes, some of the super violent stuff is toned down for injury sake, but basing that "Football is officially ruined" because of Preseason is completely off base.

Bah....scores in football can be misleading. That was pretty serious there, but that just goes to show that the mismatches at key positions were too great to overcome along with the pressure of SuperBowl. I'm all about the Seahawks getting a win, but did want to see Peyton get another win too (even though neither are my team and I'm not on any particular bandwagon)

Seattle proved that QB doesn't have to do all the work and that enormous fast corners can change the game plan of even the most gifted passer...

As for the rule enforcement.... It's the job of the offense and defense to play the game by the rules. If they get flagged for something and they weren't guilty, the league will get blowback from the fans. No one wants to see inconsistency in the game....especially not Vegas. I'm all for keeping the players from getting injured as badly as long as they are able to play the game within reason. It may take 3-4 years before we see things equalize, but the QB hit calls and defenseless recevier calls did get less and less frequent in the past year as DBs got used to the rules and how they were enforced.

This rule was adopted in 1978, and its enactment is regarded as contributing to the increase in passing efficiency the NFL has witnessed since that time."

1978. It as a rule almost as Superbowl itself.


And, for people saying football is on the decline: "Super Bowl XLVIII became the most-watched American television program in history with an average audience of 111.5 million viewers, the fourth time in five years the game had set a record". Yeah, obviously, nobody is watching it anymore...

You could throw a strong elite athlete out on a football field and they'd probably be okay with little training (defensive end comes to mind). I can't imagine someone doing that in hockey, basketball or baseball.
 
5 yards, automatic first down for looking at a receiver. I get it that this is preseason, but seems to me that this is the only thing that was emphasized and the penalty outweighs the offense.

Watch the games and tell me if this wasn't the only thing that got called on, and with a lot more frequency.

After the 49ers crying about the Hawks and the trouncing in the Superbowl you cannot expect the league to not try and curb the aggressive secondary. It sucks, the LOB plays hard, fast, and rough. They make the game fun to watch.

I saw a few offensive PI's last night get by. To be honest, until they start hammering down on the receivers themselves, the defensive PI calls will piss me off. They need to use common sense too, anymore if a DB even so much as breathes on a receiver wrong the flag goes flying.
