I started running a few weeks ago for cardio between my workout days (I'm cutting atm) and I've noticed that I have developed a terrible pain in my right foot. The pain is located right on top of the foot, almost dead center between your toes and heel. Originally I had a pain (same foot) on the top right side but that pain has subsided but not completely and it's somewhat painful to walk. I've taken some pain pills to try and alleviate the pain but it comes back. Any ideas? I'd guess I'll have to use the bike or elliptical machine for cardio? :confused:

Stop running immediately until this at least fades away. I've had foot pain before and in one case it slowly got worse, another fairly fast better and another it basically stayed the same. What you are describing could be anything from tight shoelaces on that side (unlikely) to something more significant, from tendinitis to even a more severe stress fracture. I've not enjoyed a stress fracture before but I hear they are truly delightful and to be really cherished, as one would expect from essentially breaking a bone due to repeated microtraumas.

The reason this is happening is because you're either upping miles too quickly or more likely, especially if it's just on one side, you have some imbalance in your stride or musculature which overstresses that side at the expense of the other, hence the asymmetry.

I think I'll schedule a podiatrist appt. I've always had this problem. I'll just use the elliptical machine/bike for cardio instead until then.

Don't mess with your feet. Pain means stop now, right now. Stay off it so it can heal. I'm with skoorb in that it can be any of a range of things -- including a bone spur if you've always had this pain.
