Is there any software who can fool the OS that your CPU speed is below 2Ghz. I need it for a program that only runs at speeds <1.99Ghz and I have a Intel P4 2.4Ghz. I have a Intel mother board so I cant lower the CPU speed in hardware. Im running WinXP pro.

a [somewhat dangerous] method could be to turn off the heatsink fan and get it to clock throttle.... :D

Well some software written back in the old days were written such that they depended on the speed of the system. One example that comes into mind is Xcom. Anyone tried playing the original on a current system? Absolutely unplayable!

As for the original question, I have heard of software that will slow down the CPU.. have no idea how it works or if it even works. Have you done a search for it? Another way is to try running your program in a virtual machine since the vm overhead might be enough to slow the computer down to the required speed.

is it a dos game or something?
i seem to recall a way to simulate system speed in dos for the older games that would run wayy to fast nowadays

The program I'm trying to run checks the CPU speed, if it's below 200Mhz the program crashes to the desktop. But there is a bug in that program, when you have a CPU that is >1.99Ghz it starts to go negative. My P4 2.4 is detected as a -1900 Mhz. And when the program tests the CPU it detects that -1900 < 200 and won't start.

That is a problem with getting faster and faster. I heard about apps and games that will not run at the higher speeds.
Another funny thing is GTA2. If you turn off the frame limiter and you have a fair system and a half decent card (onboard 8mb cards run it), it will go insanely fast. :) pretty funny, but not if you actually want to play the game.

Same thing with AS400, and Twainx adapters. Once you get over 1.5Ghz you have to get a patch to make the program work. Kinda wierd, I would see if there isn't an update that you can get for that program.
