What are some foods that smell great but taste terrible? Both solid and liquid, and should be edible.

Note: This is all based on opinions. No bashing.

I'll start with two:

Black coffee <- any additives usually make it taste really good
Red wine

beer.
I appricate beer in all ways, i love the way it smells from the grains and hops that make it...to the final product.
Mango
it smells good, but i hate the way it tastes.

Vanilla extract. That stuff smells so good when cooking, but tastes uber bitter.

Some types of cheeses (god knows which ones). Cheeses smell ever so good, but some of them will trigger your gag reflex.

Beat me to it.

thats because it is very consintrated... if you take a little bit of vanilla from a vanilla bean, it is not nearly as bad.
A side tip.... if you are hungry and want to curb your appitite, take a few deep sniffs of vanilla extract. that will curb your hunger. Also, dabbing vanilla on a cold sore helps shorten the time of it. :)

Papaya is something of an acquired taste. If I eat enough of it at once I get used to it and can stomach it. Papaya drinks, however, are much better.

Well, that's not exactly a food... it's an ingredient. When you use it in food, it tastes really good. I'm sure the phosphoric acid in my diet coke doesn't taste very good by itself, but the soda tastes pretty good. ;)

If anyone here makes french toast without vanilla... try putting some vanilla in it. Oh man. So good.

I'll assume you guys are talking about imitation vanilla extract. I have a bottle of real vanilla that I bought in Roatan, Honduras, and tasted alone, it is nothing like imitation vanilla extract.

Anyway, I agree with coffee. :)

Good point.

There are several foods like that. I would have to include Philly Cheesesteak with that. I smells good and I get excited about it, but they are never as good as I hope they will be.

LOL.... I was thinking of this and then I scrolled down and saw this guy's answer, I was like hell yeah!

When I was a kid, yeah, it was candy, growing up I realized that not every sugary food was ideal for my taste buds because it was just awful that last time I tasted it, so many years ago~

It smells good to you? You're blessed.

I work at a banquet facility and they occasionally have big indian weddings, complete with indian cuisine buffet. The food they bring out smells absolutely nasty. The only thing that was good ever was beef in some kind of sauce, and it didn't even smell good. It was just good because you could still taste the beef and the sauce wasn't too offensive.
