Food poisoning, again

Back in 2004, I came down with Campylobacteriosis after eating (we think) some bad turkey. There's a post in the archives about it after I was discharged from the hospital.

Well I got it again last week from a chicken burrito that my mother and her friend brought back from an area restaurant. Her friend got sick, too, but not as bad. My mother had something different, so she dodged the bullet. Last time, I lost 12 or 13 pounds in like eight days. This is what I've eaten since Friday:

Two cans of chicken soup - just the broth
One can of vegetable soup - just the broth
Two cups of yogurt
One piece of white toast

I've drank a bunch of water and Gatorade, a bottle of green tea, a couple cans of Sprite. Though I'm starting to have a little more interest in food (or least the smell of it), my guts still aren't up to it. I can hear my bowels rolling around as I'm typing this, but the diarrhea is slowing down. Monday was the first time I've been on a computer since Friday evening.

Great, now I have another six months to worry about Guillain-Barré syndrome.

Why do you have to worry about Guillain-Barré syndrome?
Some (less than 1 in 1000 cases) individuals develop Guillain-Barré syndrome, in which the nerves that join the spinal cord and brain to the rest of the body are damaged, sometimes permanently. -- reference linked above

All forms of Guillain-Barré syndrome are due to an immune response to foreign antigens (such as infectious agents or vaccines) but mistargeted to host nerve tissues instead (a form of antigenic mimicry). The targets of such immune attack are thought to be gangliosides, which are complex glycosphingolipids present in large quantities on human nerve tissues, especially in the nodes of Ranvier. An example is the GM1 ganglioside, which can be affected in as many as 20-50% of cases, especially in those preceded by Campylobacter jejuni infections. -- reference linked above

tcsenter's poison plan - the fat practically shoots off your hips.... and out both ends.

Oh and I love to drink gatorade too when I'm sick. I don't know why, just goes down well.

Sounds like what I've got right now. I haven't eaten anything in the past two days. Just some water, tea, and juice. Zero interest in food.

That sucks...I've never had anything close to food poisoning. *knocks on wood and rubs his iron-clad stomach*

wow.. i have iron constitution when it comes to food, id die if i can't eat.
Go to Mexico and order up some food from a street vendor along with a nice cup of tap water. It will expand your horizons. 😛

Less than 1 in 1000 sounds like pretty good odds to me, I wouldn't worry.
Well I was more worried about risk added or compounded from repeated exposure. I'm already getting my ass kicked on the law of averages here by contracting it twice in five years.

Get well soon!
