Food, Inc. is a new movie out covering the current state of our food industry. IMO this is the main problem above all others contributing too our health care crisis.

Not playing near me so no idea if/when I'll get to see it. What and how we eat is the very basis for our health, and it's like our food industry is set up to keep people perpetually sick.

Everyone has a choice of what to eat. It's easy to eat healthy. It's easy to eat unhealthy; your choice.

It probably looks easy to some of us. Sadly, food and neurosis are often intimately connected, and food becomes a substitute for self respect not to mention many other issues.

Edited because there was no need to be judgmental.

Haven't seen the movie yet, but I've heard about it and want to see it. It's very difficult to eat healthy without paying silly prices. Probably a big part of the obesity problem in our country. Poorer you are, fatter you are.

Everyone can pay $40+ month for a cell-phone, but all they can afford are 1000+ cal meals, right?

Give me a break. One of the most expensive habits in the US is smoking, and guess who smokes more? Poor.

A big bag of rice and some chicken breasts arent expensive. Stop making excuses for the lazy obese that drain our society.

My dad, uncle, and I each shot one in Newfoundland. 300lb of meat each is plenty to feed me for at least a year...

I won't make excuses for the adults, the problem is the fat adults pass it on to their kids. Poor people make terrible choices, no doubt. They generally are poor because they make bad choices and aren't the brightest bulbs on the tree. If mom fed you kool-aid, mac-n-cheese and wonder bread, you're probably not going to figure it out until you are a fat adult.

As a country we subsidize processed grains.

And I love Costco rice and chicken breasts :)

where was that guy that ate pretty healthy for $50 a month total? and he'd be really healthy by switching the canned veggies for frozen at not much higher pricing.

in college my roommate and i would eat marinated chicken breast hot off the foreman with veggies and rice for next to nothing all the time. easy, cheap, and didn't take any longer than getting into the car and driving down to mcdonald's.

I'd take a hard look at the ingredients on the labels as well your intake of the sugar, salt, oils, corn and refined grains companies love to pump into food. Plus things like the preservatives in there which aren't even really food at all. Plus any hormones injected into the meat or pesticides on the vegetables. How about any of that food being genetically modified? I commend anyone who tries to eat healthy, but with our food industry what you assume you're eating vs. what you're actually are eating aren't necessarily the same thing.

The lunch meat is full of nitrates unless you buy organic. You should also be eating some nuts and fruit and fish, I should think plus many more kinds of vegetables.

Yep, get the big pack of Foster's Farms and grill away!

The fact that we look differently on a parent bringing an overweight child into a fast food place and a parent giving the child a cigarette is sad.

Its much, much easier to eat unhealthy. Its really not easy to eat healthy at all, unless you eat at home most of the time. There is a fine line for balance.

Thats a lot of work man. First having to reach up in the cupboard for the Cheerios. Then having to reach in to the fridge for some milk. Then you might need some help for the rest like getting the bowl and pouring the milk. Good luck finding someone to peel that banana because they don't peel themselves.

(check out a larger size asian store near you for rice...MUCH cheaper, and MUCH better) I think $20 for a 50 lb bag. We go thru a bag a month.

By 2009, in the United States consumer desire for "no artificial growth hormones" caused a domino-effect causing most milk products to become rBST-free.
...
Several milk purchasers and resellers have elected not to purchase milk produced with rBST. The nation's largest dairy processor, Dean Foods, no longer sells milk from rBST-treated cows, and the top 3 grocery retailers in the nation, Wal-Mart, Kroger, and Costco have pledged not to sell such milk in their stores.

Eating healthy isnt that hard if one bothers to actually do it. Most of us however enjoy fatty foods because they taste much better than greens and fruits. And it is easier to eat fast food than cook a well balanced meal.
