Yes, I will check. I've gotten sick from stuff that has started to go bad - nothing remotely life-threatening, but enough to make me feel like crap (sometimes literally, if you get my drift) for a day or so. Not worth it for what is generally less than a dollar's worth of food.

Yes, I have seen food spoil before its expiration date, generally milk - even sealed containers.
