Food for thought...

Folks,

was thinking about something today and wanted to use ya'll as a sounding board.

As some of you may know, I (along with TankGuys) do a fair amount of business in the s939 Opteron world. Ben and I are very committed to providing ya'll with the best possible procs at the best possible price with the best possible attitude. (Yeah, that's a lot of "bests" i know). One thing that has been kicking around upstairs is the idea of doing some "pre-testing" (or pre-burning) for parts that come in.

Here's what I've been thinking.

1.) Establishing a pretty basic benching system (a la the "Storage Bench" at Storagereview.com) consisting of a good aftermarket HSF, nForce4/R200/ULI board, a good solid bank of dimms (OCZ, Corsair, Crucial, etc.), and a solid power supply.
2.) Doing a baseline overclock or burn-in on tray processors only (box processors sold as is) for those who want it done and stating/providing a report that xx processor, under the same equipment conditions, etc. will provide a xxx% overclock.

Now, i do understand that there are so many gosh darn variables in this thing that it seems kind of stupid to do this, but...hear me out.

1.) I receive new steppings before ya'll do. Most of the time, I'm getting the procs directly from AMD - Singapore and very recent week codes.
2.) I (and I'm pretty sure that Ben does too) receive COUNTLESS questions regarding these new steppings and their basic oc'ing ability.
3.) If it can help you with your purchasing decision (sure, sure...that's the basic part, right?), why not?

Here are the questions I want feedback on:
1.) So, reading over what i've written, does this make sense?
2.) Is this a worthwhile pursuit? If so, what are some of your recommendations that would make YOU (the consumer) feel comfortable with newer steppings/weeks and their ability to oc?
3.) What are some parts that you recommend?
4.) Would it be worthwhile to have a wide variety of testing platforms (yes, i've got the space and the time) or just keep it to a bare minimum?
5.)What parts would you recommend as a starter benching machine?

Message to the Mods:
I'm more interested in feedback versus sales. I've tried to keep this as sales neutral as possible. If ANYTHING seems vaguely "selling," please let me know. I read the rules and am trying very, very, very hard to not violate them.

Thanks,

Dave
