Well, a distiller is actually better than a filter, I'd say. With a britta-type thing, any chemicals in the water from pipe purges (ever see the water come out yellow or other colors? That's them cleaning the pipes. With chemicals.) stay in the filter and could come out in future water.
With a distiller, those get left behind by the boiling and you just clean out the tank.
We have a commercial-size distiller that churns out a lot of water, but I bought one of the counter top models for my girlfriend. She's waiting until her family moves to a new home (couple of days) to set it up but I looked at it and it looks well made, and uses the same basic principles as any other distiller.
So, from my experience, distiller > filter, britta or otherwise 😉
