Broke college student who's just starting. I have enough cash for whatever (I worked a lot in HS and saved money). But I decided to make this goal of going until October 5th with only $130.

Now I already have some food. I have cereal, granola bars, fruit snacks, saltines, some bread, and macaroni. About $80 in food. These were non-parishables my parents got me before I left.

Think I can make it with about $210 in groceries til October 5?

Yes. Vegetables, beans and potatoes. Meat once every third day. Healthy stuff.

Learn how to cook tasty soups.

Easy. I can buy bulgogi beef at the korean market for 3 bucks a pound. I usually buy 20 bucks worth and its enough for me and my girlfriend to eat twice a day for 2 weeks.

Add some brown rice and some veggies and you got a meal there.

I agree with guyver. Buy meat in bulk, freeze it. Thaw and cook when you want, saving leftovers.

My typical week:
Cook 3 lbs of ground beef - Monday. Cook 1 lb into taco meat. Eat burritos
Tuesday - Fajitas with taco meat
Wednesday - Meat sauce pasta
Thursday - Hamburger helper
Friday - something else with ground beef in it.

You want to use a few main ingredients and add to them to make them more interesting.

Tips:
Frozen chicken breasts
Ground beef
Rice
Beans
Potatoes
Pasta (of any kind)

I've gone a month on 150 dollars, its pretty easy to do 2 weeks.

Like others have said beans (from dried beans) and rice. There isn't anything cheaper. I think of that every time I stare at that 50 lb. bag of rice they sell at Costco.

Make friends with big time hunters. In PA you can get 3 or 4 deer in a season and they always like to share their meat. :D

You cook for 3 people for $90 every 2+ weeks?
Shit. My family of 4 spends $20 in MILK that often.

You could EASILY do it. I consume between 2.5k-5.5k calories a day depending on if I'm trying to lose weight or gain weight and even when I'm doing 5.5k/day I can do it at about $300 a month. Like others have said, never eat out, cook all your food, buy things on sale, use coupons. It's easy. My gf has really showed me the technique of coupon/sale shopping for groceries and I save like 30-50% every time I go to the store.

Stop buying processed foods like granola bars and cereal. Those are much more expensive than if you made stuff yourself.

Get a big container of oats for breakfast instead of cereal. Get lots of frozen chicken and cans of tuna to eat for dinner. Eat them with rice, pasta, or potatoes for a starch. Get yourself some veggies to eat with them.

Eating healthy and good can be done for very cheap, you just need to steer clear of the processed foods and expensive meats/veggies. I hate when fat people use the excuse that it is too expensive to eat healthy.

If I really want to I can feed my wife and I very well for $200 in a month. Usually we spend more like $500 though since I buy things like fish, steak, good fresh fruits/veggies, etc...

Hehe, $130 could last me an entire semester when I was a college student. Think bag of rice, packs of instant noodles, head of cabbage, pack of hot dogs, bread, head of lettuce, and a few tomatoes, cheese, bag of frozen peas, pack of ham or turkey ham (or even spam), some canola oil, and some eggs.

Eggs, peas, ham, rice & some oil make for a mean fried rice. Make a batch and it will last you a few days. You can freeze the ham and peas and it will last a while. I used to make this for floormates from time to time.

Instant noodles, cabbage & hot dog slices make for a decent quick meal when necessary. Hot dogs can be frozen as well. Cabbage lasts a while when refrigerated.

Bread, lettuce & tomatoes, cheese and ham make for a decent sandwich. Bread can be frozen to preserve it. Just toast it and it will be fine. Or use the eggs, tomatoes and cheese to make another decent sandwich. Lettuce and tomatoes can last for close to 2 weeks if your fridge is decently cold.

Lettuce and tomatoes can be used to make salad (you can buy dressing or use a little salt and pepper).

You can even pick up some butter or peanut butter to pair with the bread for breakfast, and maybe pick up some cheap fruit from time to time (apples do nicely). Only things you will need to buy bi-weekly are probably bread (you will run out), eggs (run out), and some of the veggies (which go bad if you don't use them by then). I know this sounds bad, but I used to just grab condiments from the school cafeteria (i.e. salt, pepper, mustard, ketchup packs).

I guess you might want some instant coffee as well. If you're a milk person, I suppose that might break the budget a bit. Overall, not the most healthy, but not bad either.

Once in a while I would splurge and go to the Chinese restaurant down the street which had a $5 lunch special. That would feed me for three meals. The soup would be breakfast, the eggroll would be lunch, and the entree would be dinner. :D

It is really going to depend on where you live and the local prices. Here I can buy milk for $3.49 a gallon, but a friend in NY pays $5.19 a gallon. I live in farming territory so local produce is cheaper than most places.

If you really want to eat cheap then look at the diets of some of the 3rd world countries. There people eat spending less than $1 a day. Most of it consist of rice, grains, beans, potatoes. Meat is only used for seasonings.

For me I eat a lot of rice, it is cheap, very good for nutrition and so many ways to prepare it that I never get tired of it. One of my favorite meals, and I am making it today is red beans and rice. Enough for 4 people , actually enough for 8 people or 4 people x 2 meals cost me about $5. Rice $1.50 , Beans $1.50 , tomato paste $1, seasonings $1

The biggest tip I can give I guess is learn to cook. If you look at what people used to eat before all the processed foods came out you find the basic stuff, flour, eggs, butter, rice, dried beans, sugar, can be used to make a large variety of meals that do not cost a lot. That doesn't mean you have to do without things like sweets either. Home made cinnamon roles are better than anything you can buy and cost about $3 to make.

LOL, ignore people here when it comes to grocery bills. There have been threads where people claimed they do not spend more than $20 a week on groceries. I have no idea how you can pull that off unless you are just having Ramen every day or your diet consists of all fatty junk food.

I get packs of 20 Ramen for 10 bucks. Assuming 3 a day, thats 54 packets, or 3 boxes, 30 bucks for 18 days.

Of course the medical bills down the line would probably cost more than the savings.

But yeah, my dorm has 4 guys and we do 40 bucks a week on food bulk, frozen food.

Oh I know... hence my "shens"
I mean fresh fruit and veggies are off the charts expensive.
We don't even buy many "luxury" items when it comes to groceries and we are $120+ per week.

you have to come up with meal plan and cook in bulk and refrigerate.

say a meat sauce /stew, coupled with rice/noodle + some boiled/stir-fried veggie is one meal, you just fridge/freezer the left over sauce and eat another day. Do 5 different ones and you got variety.

In essence, rice or noodle is your main meal, the meat sauce/meat/fish/whatever animal protein + veggies are there to complement.

Not that hard to do really.

I used to eat Ramen, but found that I had to eat again an hour or so later. They just don't stick with you like REAL food. They're good for a snack when you know you're going to be eating something solid later, but that's about it.

Look up the recipes for asian coleslaw that use ramen noodles....that's about the only thing I buy ramen for anymore.

Sure you can. Ramen noodles.

You won't win health rewards for your diet... but you will not go hungry.

For instance:

Box of mac an cheese $.78
Can of chicken $1.79
Frozen broccoli pieces $.99

Cook mac and cheese and mix in other ingredients after warming them.

Dinner for two nights at least: $2.78

$200 for 3 weeks shouldn't even be an issue. You could eat almost anything on that budget.

If you cut out the cereal and other expensive crap, stick to pasta and rice, grab a bunch of meat from the grocery store and freeze it...you could make it work on $30-$40/week and still eat well if you wanted to.

You can probably save money buy buying bulk meat online. Not sure what is considered bulk though... 10 pounds... alternator sized?

what's the best method of defrosting meat? if i'm not in a hurry, i'll put it in the frdige, but that can take 2 days.

when i'm in a hurry, i'll bath it in cool water in the sink - i'm just not sure how smart that is...
