Which plugins/modules/addons/extensions/whattnot do you recommend?

Use the ones you need, and don't use the ones you don't. For me that means mostly decoders, for things like like ape, alac, and psf/video game music. There's no reason to install components that you'll never use, just browse the big list and decide for yourself.
