Fong Kai question

Hello everyone. Several of you are big Fong Kai case users and I've searched for an answer to this particular question and I'm still uncertain what to do. I just ordered a T-bird / MSI pro2 combo from Monarch As you can see it includes a Tai-sol HS/fan. So I was considering getting this Fong Kai 603 from here. It comes with a 250 Watt power supply that according to the AMD website is not on the approved 1 Ghz list. Has anyone else out there used this 250 Watt on a 1 gig or higher system? The $28 dollar add-on price to up this case to 300 watts would put it over $100 bucks with shipping, that seems a little much for me. I won't be overclocking in all likelyhood for a while. Any other suggestions? Oh, and did I get ripped off =) Those companies seemed to fine at resellerratings.com.

Thanks

You need a 300w for 1GHz and beyond according to AMD's site so you'll have to upgrade the ps, though it doesn't make much sense to pay $100+ for an FK-603. I'd get the Antec SX830 which already comes with a nice 300w and more room for your stuff - just my opinion there.

Ah, guess I should have figured that 300 watt feature out before. I'm beginning to freak myself out with my first build, thought I was being pretty carefull. Oh well, guess I'll never learn unless I try. I think that antec case is at the local compusa for 79 bucks.

I was impressed by the 'shroud' I guess

For $79? Wow! I didn't think it was available that cheap, especially in a B&W store, since it was $81 @ Onvia and $99 at BestBuy.

Are you sure it's an SX830?

i know a place you can get the FK-603 w/ a 300W power supply for $89 (unfortunately not including shipping and handling - but that wont be cheap anywhere if you're ordering online since all cases weigh so much). Altima Solutions sells Fong Kai cases without the Fong Kai label on them, but rest assured that they are Fong Kai.

Altima Solutions

just follow the links to the "cases and power supplies" section and look through the list very carefully. if you end up ordering from them, be very specific about what you want, b/c they sent me an FK-603 w/ a 250W PS at first, so i had to call them back and b!tch b/c i ordered one w/ a 300W PS. i know you dont want to spend over $100, but i dont know of any store that sells the FK-603 w/ anything other than its standard 250W PS, unless you order online, and Altima Solutions is the only place i could even find that particular case w/ a 300W PS anyways, so its really slim pickings.

Well,

you could always buy the case without a PS which would bring the price down to $53.- and hunt for a PS elsewhere...

I got my FK-320 case from Directron. The transaction went flawlessly, and I wouldn't hesitate to order from them again.

These Fong Kai cases are freaking magic. In my old Enlight 7237, my IBM 14gb deskstar would made a clacking sound occassionally. After I transplanted my PC into the Fong Kai 603 case, this has stopped completely.

If you're buying a mid-tower don't even consider a different case the Fong Kai is by far the best.

yes, but can you order an FK-603 w/ a 300W PS from Directron?

actually, ordering a case w/ out the PS is a good idea if you want to save money. just look for a cheap 300W PS on pricewatch.com. as for the FK-603, they are fairly cheap without the PS.

Well if you are gonna be dumping $100 into a case probably, get the FKi-320. 300 watt PS already and it comes in a snazzy black color too. :p

I wouldn't be terribly concerned about the "inadequacy" of the FongKai PSU unless you plan on a really loaded system.

Read between the lines on the AMD site just a little bit and you'll see what I mean. That PSU is OK for 950's, but not for 1000's. They also list a 150w SFX for the 1200's. WTF?

Several known solid PSU's drop off at 1000. I think that maybe they have just fallen behind on rating units for the higher speed cpu's, or they aren't being submitted by the manufacturers. Remember that the slot-A 950mhz Athlon was out and top of the line for a long time before the T-Birds had their Debut. I could be wrong, but I'm not even sure that they ever made any (or very few) original-type Athlons at 1000, which might help explain the discrepancies. Original Athlons and T-Birds are very different....
