Follow-up visit for an adopted Dog

A friend of mine adopted a dog from a rescue group in manhattan 3 months ago. The group advertised on Craigslist and my friend found her on there. Originally, it was a "temporary" stay until they could find the dog a new home. Fortunately, she fell in love with the dog and decided to keep her. She tried contacting the shelter for several weeks to confirm adoption but didn't get a response. Now the shelter is asking for a visit to check up on the dog. Technically, she hasn't signed any full adoption papers (if there is such a thing) as she couldn't get back in contact with the shelter. Is this some sort of shady dealing or scam or is it a legit visit? Does anyone have any experience with shelter visits? She's worried that they might scam her into paying "adoption fees".

the groups name is "Strays from the Heights". I googled them but I've only seen their advertising and no negative comments.
 
Have her contact whichever REGULATORY agency handles animals. I suspect they will tell her that after X days the dog can be considered abandoned by the group.
 
I've heard of follow-ups before. I guess some shelters really care about what happens to their dogs.
 
So, If she hasn't technically adopted the dog yet, shouldn't she be paying adoption fees? I just adopted a dog from a shelter and the dog was at a "foster home", which is what it sounds like your friend actually did. Sounds like she was a temporary foster parent for the dog until the dog was adopted. If she now wants to keep the dog, then yes, she will/should be paying adoption fees.
 
I'm going to bet that it's a scam. Let the customer take the dog home and get attached, then nail them with a ton of fees when they want to adopt.
 
It makes sense that she might have to pay an adoption fee. Many shelters have to front the cost of supplies, Vet services, and Spay/Neutering, they usually recoup that from the adoption fees.

This. If she's a new foster home for this Shelter, they will of course check on the dog after a short while. When they contacted her about the visit, did she inform them that she wanted to adopt the dog?

She said she tried to contact them to keep the dog but they didn't get back to her. How much are adoption fees generally? I understand they probably vary from state to state but anybody have an idea?

It varies by the Shelter/Rescue. On avg, my guess would be around $200-250 but that's for a dog that been vetted and spayed/neutered.
 
My dog that I adopted 2 weeks ago was $300. Shots, balls chopped off, and chipped. I had to take him in a week later for follow up shots.

Depends drastically on the area. Our puppy was $100 but I'm sure that didn't cover the cost of the shots, neutering and all that. If there's no sort of donations or government aid for the shelter I'm sure that it could easily cost double or triple what I paid.

They sound like a small group of volunteers themselves. As such, they can charge whatever level of fees they damn well please (as low as $50 at your local SPCA, on up to the $250-300 range others here have reported), just as your gf is free to reject them and return the dog.

There is nothing sketchy going on here. None of these small bands of mostly volunteer dog rescuers is looking to get rich off their evil scheme. 😉

If your gf really loves the dog, then any fees are a total non-issue, right?

The cost of the shots is negligible. They cost next to nothing. The fee that varies widely is for spaying/neutering. A lot of vets help out shelters by doing the spaying/neutering for a very low cost.
 
I had to go through a pretty thorough screening to be considered from a German Shepherd Rescue once. 2 visits to the house, a trip by my wife and I to the rescue to meet some of the animals, and then a 30 day waiting period to make sure we were serious. Had we ended up adopting one of their dogs, it would have been followed by one or two home inspections over the next few months to make sure we were on the up and up and the dog was well adjusted.

So no I don't think it's out of the ordinary. However, I do agree they likely forfeited their rights if they broke contact for that long.

Woah that's crazy. My adoption was just submit application and pick up dog. I guess we probably do have a little bit more of an animal problem here in LA though.
 
My adoption last month was $75. The dog was up to date on his shots, flea/heartworm meds, and neutered. Not sure if dog size/breed matters, but mine is a Lab Mix and about 65 lbs. I was approved on the spot at the shelter and then drove to the foster home to pick him up. This was in Florida.
