Foley online chats were a prank?

So first he's alcoholic, then gay, then abused by catholic priests (good one!) and now it's all just a prank....

Man this is worse than Bush coming up with random right-wing-nut legislature (life , liberty and no fags) just to take focus off of reality. As if the TV didn't fill people up with "reality" as is .

People still get arrested over pranks. Not that it was a prank, but saying "JK lol" won't get you out of jail.

Didn't he come out and admit to being gay? Was that a prank as well?? Even *I* am staying away from this one 🙂

One thing interesting in this story is the idea that the IMs were not meant to be released. When will the Democrats start to complain about private communications being used for political reasons?

Slash the guy was 18 at the time of these IMs, what are they going to arrest him for? Being a gay Republican?

He indisputedly was 17 when some of those IM communications occured in spite of some pathetic attempts by extreme Republican partisans to try to claim otherwise.

The link says nothing about not being gay...it says the page wasn't gay. He was faking it...and Folely pulled a boner 😉

They've begun that long ago. Hypocrites.

Which kid are you referring to? The was more than one instance of abuse and there is more than one source of evidence in this case.

Was his drunken attempt to enter the Page dormitory a prank as well? Ummmm. Yeaaahhhh. Ooook then. *scratches head

So, that's the latest attempt to throw this thing off. "Um, it was all a prank. Yeah....That's it!"
Works for me. Not.

In the US?

Perhaps..

So. if any of the men were underaged .. is it political or criminal?

BTW, Rove broke into a Democrats headquarters and stole letterhead to pull pranks in the past.

My theory on the "prank"

Get your tin-foil ready...

Dude exchanges sexy e-mails/IMs with the distinguished Mr. Foley.
IM's are leaked.
Foley immediately resigns. (What?)
Dude's identity is "leaked" by the press - up until now he was annonymous.
Dude: "Whoops! I was just kidding! I'm not gay! We wuz playin'"

This thing with the IMs is a fabulous distraction and fine example of the lazy US media. While everyone is focused on the IMs during the house vote, the rumors of a drunk Foley trying to get into the page dorm get pushed to the background. The other pages who are coming forward to allege improper behavior against Foley can't get any press.

If all this was about was an IM chat on the house floor with a minor who was of consenting age (or a legal adult... the jury is still out on that one I guess), then the congressman is just another closeted gay guy who was outed against his will. His immediate resignation indicates that there might be something else more sinister going on. It's hard to imagine a Washington politician whose skin was so thin that he couldn't stand the embarrassment of being kicked out of the closet.

The "prank" itself implies that it was an open secret amongst the pages that Foley liked 'em young and male. So the question arises; was the page program Foley's personal Disneyland? And if so, how badly did he take advantage of the situation?

EEEEeeeewwww...LOL
g1 EZ

the only frustrating thing to me about all of these disinformation propaganda schemes the neocons or their proxies are perpetrating is that a large segment of our voting population actually believes this kind of crap and the neo's know it and aren't afraid to go there.

just imagine the huge amounts of money that was spent on researching how the mass media can be used for devious political purposes. i bet alot of pro's that are involved in producing ads and tv/radio commercials are in huge demand for this purpose as this stuff is right up their alley.

i mean, they're the ones that thought up the silly (but effective?) .99 cents or 99$ at the end of every price quote that's ever been printed or aired because it makes the quote look "cheaper" right?

Wasn't it Foley that created legislation stating anyone screwing with kids under 18 like this was being a sexual predator? Irony!

Pedophiles seek a job that brings them in contact with children. Their motive not to protect, but as a predator. Folley's M.O. fits the actions of a sexual predator.

The question is did he do anything with anyone under 18? Sure he meet them while they were 17, but what if he waited till they are 18? Does that make it a crime? Doesn't one of his IMs having the kid saying something like "don't you want to wait till I am 18" or something like that?

I am NOT disputing the fact that Foley was a perv and should not be in congress, I am just wondering if we are jumping ahead of our selves with the put Foley in jail type of comments. And all you people talking about pedophiles, look up the definition of pedophile, liking 16 year olds is creepy, but it is NOT pedophilia. Otherwise everyone who bought the Rolling Stone with Brittney on the cover is a pedophile.

Drudge is really scrambling, straining hard to deflect criticism from Hastert and the Republican Party in general. Cynics may say ABC has a pro-Democrat agenda but Drudge has a proven track record of trying to whip up confusion about the who/what/when of anything which makes Repubs look bad, basically by linking to right wing blogs of questionable credibility.

I doubt a prank would have started in 1985, when Foley started hitting on the page boys. Like I said in other posts, it was well knows that if you got an invite from Foley to take a ride in his BMW, it was wise to take a rain check.

yeah, and the age of consent in DC is 16. So the kid is entitled to scew anyone he likes.

you need to accept Foley's indiscretions for what they are - an unethical but not terribly shocking abuse of power - rather than trying to turn this fiasco into a "pedophilia" scandal.

it appears that he exercised some degree of restraint, only initiating the email contact after they left the page program. it's also interesting he asks the guy's age a few times in one of the instant messaging exchanges. so it appears he was paying some consideration to age factors, and whether or not the young men were still in the page program. His behavior represents - arguably - an abuse of his power, but he appears to have dotted and crossed his legal is & ts. I will be surprised if legal charges are laid against him.

The Republican party system is built on favors for favors, and in this sense Foley was a true Republican, apparently exchanging career assistance and support for an occasional cyber- jerk off session with the young men concerned.
