I've it running on my laptop which I keep running 24/7 (it's a Windows 2000 Advanced Server Domain Controller and it's a big PITA to reboot it)

Wow, Win2k AS as a DC on a laptop? You must be quite patient. 🙂
Anyway, both my rigs are winxp machines, and they stay up 24/7/365, with twice-weekly reboots to install critical updates or new drivers and such. The 500mhz celeron would be switched over to f@h also, but the eccp team needs lots of help too (there, I had to say something to keep this on topic 😉 ).

Just an FYI, as I haven't seen it posted yet, there is a new Mac OS X client, both GUI and CLI, available for Folding@Home. Version numbers are 2.19a and 2.19, respectively.

I've been looking to switch my machines over from S@H now that the race with DSLR is over, and I'm gonna pit my Dual G4/450 against my Athlon XP 1600+ (DDR) with F@H to get an idea of whether the G4 is more useful there or if it should stick to RC5 (which it RULES, beats the Athlon hands down)...

thats right folks I got the CLI quick start guide done! HERE IT IS! my next guide will be showing you how to install it as a service 🙂 (that way the bloody window is hidden 😉 )
 
anyone know how to hide the dos window? or a little guide to making it a service.. i went thru some of the yahoo group and really couldn't figure out how to get it to run as a service..
 
Go here and download firedaemon. You'll need to go to this page and download the fah2console ver 2.17. Install firedaemon into the same folder as fah, run it, configure it for fah and it runs as a service in the background. Then run the console version, configure it and you're off and running 🙂
 
I'm working on the service guide, the easyist way is to make a schedualed task to run F@H cli at startup 🙂
 
I just found another prog to hide it. Found it over at hardforums. Forgive me for looking there, but they seem to have a lot more support for Folding.

With this one there is no configuring, you just put it in the Folding directory and run it. It starts up F@H and hides it.

Now that I found that proggy, there'll be a few more machines running in the office tomorrow 😉.

*Edit - Rusty, you do know that prog is for the CLI right? I noticed in another thread you were running the console.
 
thanks rusty, that's 2nd link worked nicely.. firedaemon didn't really like me... Altho, the dual cpu one is missing.. not that i have dual cpu's.. but ya know, just in case 🙂

service will run on boot up i believe.. no need to log in (i have a few users on the comp).
also, anyone know a good progress monitoring program? I tried some of the stuff from ars.. but to no avail.

 
benifits to services are it runs at startup, (way more reliable the the start up folder) it runs fairly well hidden, you wont see it in the application tab in win2k and winXP, and you wont see it at all in the task manager in win95, 98, ME. it runs as the system so no need to login, and some have reported very minor speed increases 🙂.

Since Firedaemon doesn't currently run on Windows XP, is there a way to add F@H as a service manually by editing the registry? Will this be covered in your F@H as a service guide?
