FOLDING@HOME GUI CLIENT QUICK START GUIDE POSTED!

Thanks, narzy, it actually is pretty simple ( hell, I did it :Q )

We're up to 115th place and still climbing!

Go TeAm Go!!

You do have to config the CLI version.

FAH2Console -config

Then put in a user name and the team number 198.

I tried running it with -verbosity 9 yet it still gives me no indication of how far through it is.

How long do you expect 1 WU to take?? I just want to have a play and see what it ran like.

Also does the graphic version take alot longer than the cli version as it does in SETI??

yes, more ppl to do folding@home!!!

i just sent the guys at www.teamanandtech.com a little blurb about folding... he said he wouldn't mind putting it up. It's something short and simple... but better than nothing 🙂

c'mon.. everyones goal is to dethrone me 😛

btw, who is gandrews? and why did his stuff get split (same username).. if it was combined, he'd be #1.

thanks for letting me know that, it used to just ask, they changed it a bit, but makes sense. I dont know about verbose. also I would assume that the CLI is faster, but I am not sure. I will play with it when I get home and read the documentation a bit more.

If you use FAH2Console -config, check your client.cfg to make sure that it worked. It did not properly register the team number for me.

A simple two-minute check and edit will guarantee that your points go to TA.

No body said how long you expect a work unit to take.

I'm running four instances of the client and it's taking a while.

It's 1am now I think I started at 4.30pm so that's 8.5 hours and I've only done 21 frames. Is that normal or do the work uints have very varible times??

From the Folding@home 2.0 FAQ:

How long does it take to finish a work unit? How do you measure a work unit?

This varies, of course, on the speed of the computer and the size of the protein under study. Depending on the protein and the property studied, different size work units may be used. In general, a 400 MHz Pentium III can finish a unit in about 24 hours, although some units are shorter.

My xp1600 machine is doing a wu about every 6-7 hrs by the looks of it, my wifes Athlon about every 10-12 or so, and the 233 about every 48hrs 🙂 Course, I'm estimating as there's no program like setispy to just look at to tell...

I belive you do 100 frames, and if the CLI is telling you how many frames you've done, then thats a good indacator 🙂

narzy, is the guide complete? I'm gonna download it now....Getting tired of UD even though AT is 18th and about to get passed by HardOCP and DSLR

After the MTR race, I think I'd like to work on switching the Wildnet to F@H. I've always wanted to do something more philanthropic with these machines.

But I'll probably need to ask a lot of quetions along the way. First, how often does F@H save its state?

Thanks for the FAQ and other answers! 🙂

<< First, how often does F@H save its state? >>

To the best of my knowledge, it saves state after every frame (there are currently 100 frames for most WUs). Open source projects like ECCp have spoiled me--I want to just check it out in the source code! :disgust:

the GUI guide is complete I am working on the CLI one now 🙂 I will probably do a linux one aswell when I get a linux box that can handle Folding.

The linux client is straightforward. The hardest thing is to remember is to a 'chmod a+x' on the client to make it executable. Then it is run just like the windows CLI client (with a ./<executable> if the current directory is not in your path).

Ok, dialed up and d'loaded the client and the following is what has happened so far:

C:\Program Files\Fold@Home>fah2console -config

Note: Please read the license agreement (FAH2Console -license). Further
use of this software requires that you have read and accepted this agreement.

Right now, core65 has 99% of cpu time so I guess it's crunching? I'm going to let it go for a bit but, is this all that's need to be done? Can I hit, I assume, ESC or Ctrl-C to stop the client and then start it up later?

UPDATE: Finished a frame (4) 🙂

<waiting patiently>

Are you waiting for an answer to your questions, or for the client to finish a WU?

For the former, you seem all set and crunching away. Ctrl-C exits the client, but I think you will lose the data in the current frame (it saves state after each frame).

For the latter, good luck! 😉
Isn't there an old saying, "A watched protein never folds?"

Thanks, MM.

I took Narzy's reply to be a response to mine but, in actuality, it may not have been.

But, if it looks ok, I'll let it go for a while. Does it send WUs automatically or will I get prompted?

I've finished 11 frames at this point (there are 100 in each WU?)

<< Does it send WUs automatically or will I get prompted? >>

<< Ask before fetching/sending work [no]? yes >>

It looks like you have it set up to prompt you. If you don't want it to prompt you, edit the client.cfg file and set asknet=no.

<< I've finished 11 frames at this point (there are 100 in each WU?) >>

All the WUs that I have done had 100 frames, but apparently it wasn't always like this.

<< no woories I saw it as such, I am writing the Quickstart guide right as we speak 🙂 >>

Narzy for elite!

No wait....that's already been done.

hmmmmm

😀

And, thanks MM, again, for the info.

Thanks Narzy, that guide is very good. Is there any chance it could get put on the Team Anandtech site in the FAQ section? That would be nice.
