Folding@Home BOINC

New registration is currently closed. Final issues are being resolved regarding compatibility with the latest BOINC release. A public beta will begin after that is finished, expected in the coming week, at which time account creation will open.

From here: Folding@Home BOINC

This was just changed today.

Great! Thanks for the info, GLeeM. 😀

Now there will be some competion between Rosetta@Home, Predictor@Home, Folding@Home and other such

I'll jump back into the F@H team once they go BOINC. I was with F@H for 1.5 years but switched to BOINC due to technical issues. Can't wait.

I've seen the term BIONC tossed around, but know next to nothing about it. What is it and will there be any advantage to using BOINC versus the traditional ways of doing F&H?

Easy way of putting it, its one interface for tons of DC projects. It automaticly distrubutes CPU time to projects based on what you program. Instead of running many clients for more than one DC project, this just groups them all together. You can suspend, resume, see whats uploading/downloading, whats crunching, and even links to the websites of the projects. BOINC also keeps limited stats too. I switched to it and loved it. I'm sure theres more to it than this and someone can add if they wish.

For F@H it is another client through which they will be able to get some more WUs crunched to further their research/science. The present client(s) will continue to be developed and, they feel, will still be their main means of production.

I get the feeling they do not expect HUGE participation. I think they will be surprised!

I should make note of something I don't fully understand yet: There is something about not being able to have the same nick for both clients 😕 Or maybe it was stats not being combined? 😕

If anyone knows, could we get a good explanation?

In Folding@home/BOINC users will earn "normal" folding-points, showing up in the "normal" folding-stats, but at the same time will earn Cobblestones that will be exported so BOINC stats-sites will display. It will be a straight converstion from folding-points to Cobblestones, since they're planning to only distribute non-bonus-wu (preferrably timeless) to Folding@home/BOINC. Not sure if they've decided on the conversion-factor yet, and BOINC stats-dumps isn't planned to be turned on before they're going public.

While in BOINC all users must register and can't crunch under another name (if don't know password), this is not true in "normal" folding@home since here anyone can type-in whatever name he wants. Because of this difference, in Folding@home/BOINC all user-names must be unique, this also meaning anyone that has already crunched for Folding@home must re-start at zero if wants to try-out the BOINC-version...

For the "normal" folding team-stats it doesn't matter if BOINC-version or normal folding-version.

No comment on the application, since haven't had the opportunity to test-out the last beta-build yet...

i'll definitely give f@h another try once they're on boinc. i'm plodding to the finish line of the f@h/tas holiday race but to be blunt, i wish i had chose to sit it out and run rosetta 100%.

Rattledagger to the rescue 😉 Thanks!

"in Folding@home/BOINC all user-names must be unique" - Just forBOINC? Or "normal" also? In other words - can I have GLeeM as a name for both? If yes, then I would have to be the first in BOINC to register with that name?

It shouldn't be possible to register with a name under Folding@home/BOINC that is already used in either "normal" folding or folding/BOINC. Since GLeeM is showing-up in the stats, it means you can't use this name when generating a folding/boinc-account.

But, not sure what will happen if you're after making example a GLeeM2-account under folding/BOINC if you can also use this when running "normal"...

That is too bad. I have the same nick throughout all DC projects. That means F@H for BOINC will be the first that is different. 🙁

Yeah, me too.

Hmmm.... Maybe a mini-TeAm account?

That might be fun 😀

I still don't totally understand the username explanations (I know.. a little dense here.. srry)

So right now I fold boinc stuff under "Insidious" and I have a F@H account under "Insidious".

Are you saying I cannot use the name Insidious if I go to boinc f@H?

I guess it doesn't really matter much. I have little desire to re-start f@H with a goose-egg when boinc already has a fantastic protien preditction project in Rosetta.

Honestly though, scoring is something f@H struggles with. They just don't get it.

Ditto. TAS I love ya and to all my former F@H TeAm mates, I love you too.... but...

Isn't it possible to change the nami in regular folding? What I mean is the following:
In tegular folding I fold under the name TAS-petrusbroder.
In all other projects (BOINC and Non-BOINC) I crunch under the name of petrusbroder.
Once I have my Folding@BOINC-account, could I change my regular folding account to just pe4trusbroder? The all the DC-accounts would be the same ... :Q

That's what I gathered, but I'm not starting all over again to try to climb up to #12 on the team again. Something will have to change about this crazy, screwed up system.

In "normal" Folding@home anyone installing a client can type-in whatever username they wants, so it's impossible to change name.

So yes, Insidious, GLeeM, TAS-petrusbroder and Rattledagger and all other names showing-up in the folding-stats is "off-limits" when it comes to choosing a Folding/BOINC-username...

But, apparently the other way works, after you've made a Folding/BOINC-account someone else can run "normal" folding under this username...

A min-team account would rock anyways.

Awesome!

What would be a good name?

EDIT: Or is there already a mini-TeAm that will be doing F@H BOINC?
