I second all of the above! 🙂

I just added an old dual Xeon server (2.8 ghz Noconas) to the folding mix (I have lots of old outdated hardware 😛). I have two clients installed on it, one doing Big WUs. I wonder if it might be more efficient to run a GPU client? I think I have an old X1650 card around somewhere. Then again, that card is probably so old, I'm guessing that it won't make much of a difference either way. I don't mind my electricity bill going up $10/month, but $20-30 might be a bit much, especially if its not power efficient for the results being put out. Anyone have energy efficient suggestions that won't break the bank build-wise? Thanks.

Thanks for the update Phax.

I'm hoping to have my dedicated F@H rig up and running by next week sometime (see sig). I currently have a bunch of machines at work and at home folding but due to the fact that the ATI cards I'm using are terrible at PPD per watt, I'm thinking of throwing a second 460 into the dedicated F@H box and not using any computers that have an ATI card.

Yea F@H/ATI support of the ATI GPU client isn't great 🙁. I don't bother using my HD4830 anymore for F@H.
Your F@H rig will boost your ppd a lot 😀

F@H dropped useage of the X18xx, & X19xx cards about a yr or 2 back, if the X16xxs were supported back then they certainly wouldn't be now. Sorry mate.

Re Xeon server, is that a Pentium D based CPU or Core2?
Are the big WUs the ones with a short deadline? (I can't remember TBH).

I've thought about adding one of the new 160 GB PS3 eventually to compliment my 2 x GTX 460s. Apparently it sucks about 80W with the screensaver on compared to 200W on my fat 60 GB PS3.

Is 80W for roughly 1000ppd worth it?

The Xeons are Pentium-D based. 🙁 Like I said, I have lots of old outdated hardware. 😛

I don't think the Big WUs have short deadlines. At least not the ones the Xeon box is working on, as the deadline date is Oct 15. I think it's just large up/download sizes, but I'm not really sure if I'm using the right terminology. These are definitely not the bigadv ones.

How about a cheap 8400GS as a folding GPU? I can just stick one of those into a box that I can throw together from old parts (can probably piece together a 3800+ X2, 1-2gb RAM, and an old 80gb hd plus the 8400gs). Have the X2 run one cpu client and one gpu client? Won't cost me much ($30 for the 8400) and hopefully shouldn't use too much power either?

Is 80W for roughly 1000ppd worth it?

I have four 9600GSOs (96SP version) in my F@H box, and they get about 4000 PPD using the GPU2 client, and they take around 80-100W each (I think). That's a bit better ratio than what you are talking about.

Edit: I meant around 4000 PPD EACH. 16000 PPD for all four.

I retired the 5850 on my work computer and now will be running SMP client on all 6 cores on my 1055T. That should be good for about 10000 PPD on my overclock. My F@H rig will be initially with one GTX460 but will probably add another one before Christmas. That should be good for about 10,000 PPD as well per card with some overclocking. All in all, goal is to hopefully generate about 30,000 PPD.

Can you do bigadv on a hexacore? If so you'll get much more than 10k ppd from the smp client. I'm avg 25k with a i7 OC @ 3.61 and i just kicked it up to 3.88.

I've never had the most points in a day before, this is so cool!! Of course Mark will pass me at the next update, but it's still fun to see myself at the top of the daily pts...YAAAAAAAAAY

From what I've read, you need at least 8 cores to run bigadv.

Well I was surprised to find out that the 8400 GS is supported! 😉

Although if I were you, before buying it I would ask around to see if it would be worth running, or whether you'd be better of just letting the SMP client take all the CPU power.

What d'ya reckon folks?

Yeah, 8400GS is definitely not worth it. You'd be much better off with 8800/9800GT or GT240.

Err yea I'm sure that's true, but that isn't his choice 😉.

His choice is run 1 CPU client on his X2 3800 & 1 GPU client on a 8400 GS, or run 1 SMP(?) client on his X2 3800.

I'm seeing estimates around on the 8400gs for between 600-1200 ppd. The only number I can find for the x2 3800 is ~700ppd using the SMP. I would say that it may be a tossup between the two. So with that info, I'd probably lean toward running them both (with the classic client for the cpu).

Fair enough, not much to lose I suppose, err apart from $30 🙁

I suppose you could try the X2 3800 1st (with any old grx card) to see what ppd that gives you, no cost for that 🙂.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I actually picked up this GT240:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...-354-_-Product
for about $35AR (assuming that I get the rebate, apparently Asus' rebate process is ridiculous according to the user reviews).

I am going to plug that into my X2 3800+ box and see what it can do. 🙂 Does anyone know offhand if I will have an issue with this being a PCI-e 2.0 card into my mb's old pci-e 1-ish slot? AFAIK, they're supposed to be backwards compatible, just bandwidth differences. Other thing is I would like to limit my power usage to around ~150W total. The card at max would probably draw 75W (from the slot), the CPU up to 90W, rest of the system 25-30W(??). Assuming that the card & CPU will not always be at max, could I expect around 150W usage? I would prefer that my electrical bill doesn't double. 😛

Thanks in advance.

PCI-E 2.0 cards are electrically compatible with PCI-E 1.0. I have a GTX 460 in my X2 3800+ crunching as we speak. 🙂

Your electrical bill won't double. You may add $5 to $10 per month as a guesstimate.

Thanks. I should be getting the card today. I'll let you know how it goes. It's nice to know that there is someone out there not running state of the art. 😛 Although that vidcard is pretty close. Seems like overkill. 😛

If you're running the GPU client & the std CPU client then the GPU will be at max load & 1 CPU core will be too.
Not sure what the 'spare' core will be at, but IIRC the GPU client will use 5-10% of it??
